Title: Underwater railway tracks and submerged forest revealed by draining operation
Post by: Alphabet Soup on April 02, 2015, 01:00:35 PM
This is a low-level piece - no stress, no anxiety, no agenda. It's just a look at a lake in my neighborhood. Around the turn of the last century a power company built a hydro-electric dam. They utilized this finger lake as the reservoir, augmenting its capacity by adding berms.

Each fall they lower the level of the lake by about two and a half feet and then allow it to naturally refill in the spring. For some reason they drained it this past winter and in doing so have revealed a lake bottom not seen in generations.

Hey that's pretty cool.  Wonder if you ran down there with a metal detector anyting of interest could be found.  Sounds like time is short though, as they say re-fill to recreational levels will be done by Memorial Day.

I might have answered some of my questions, the pics here (http://www.seattlepi.com/local/article/Drained-Lake-Tapps-exposes-underwater-forests-6159822.php#photo-7716985) show an old boat motor, what looks like a Sammy Hagar cassette tape, an old tire that made a perfect ringer around and old tree stump, a bunch of latter day crap...people sure do litter a lot!

Nice looking country though.  Will probably stay that way too as long as another volcano doesn't pop off.

They are actively chasing souvenir hunters off the lake (bottom) and threatening with (of all things) trespassing. It is a surprisingly treacherous mud bog (and it smells!).

Isn't a recreation area by definition public property?

Oh, sorry...there I go thinking like a traditional American again!   ::facepalm::

Smells like Obama, eh?  Bleeech!

looks like a great place to go out with a metal detector.

Wear snowshoes though.

Neat. I'd be down there on foot with a hand held GPS marking fishing spots.
