We do it all the time with canned goods and pasta and a few other things. Just use your head, and your nose; if the can's swollen (even if new) don't eat it; if it smells or looks off, don't eat it.

Here's the thing though, this is the same government that forces food and drug manufacturers to put these overly cautious expiration dates on everything in the first place!
The hallmark of statism -- one organ of the state commands one thing, another organ commands the opposite, and a third organ stands ready to grind you under its heel for violating one or both of those diktats.
