He was a character.  Some people can play batshyt crazy pretty well...mostly because they are batshyt crazy.

PS - He wasn't in The Hunt for Red October (1990)...but he was the senior Admiral in Down Periscope (1996)

  He wasn't robbing the back he was found asleep in in it.  But loved his movies. RIP Rip

Yup, batshyt crazy can be entertaining...
