Title: Things You Need To Know Before You Buy The Farm
Post by: Pandora on July 22, 2011, 11:26:35 AM
Quote
There’s no obvious word for what I do. I have a homestead and aim for self reliance…but I still have a day job. Is that “homesteading”? Who knows? Homesteading is a spectrum between Grizzly Adams and the banker’s deluded trophy wife who hires illegal aliens to plant tomatoes for her. I haven’t gone as self-reliant as I’d like but that’s probably good. It keeps me from going too Mosquito Coast and/or starving in a mud hut.

Another thing to know; it’s a bigger challenge than you think. Too many lessons are learned the hard way, most of what you read is bullsh*t, and half of what you actually know won’t apply to your situation.

I probably don’t know what I’m doing but I do know plenty of stuff that’s wrong. I’m always happy to help folks avoid obvious pitfalls (many of which I’ve experienced first hand). So I’ve written an unordered and incomplete list of things you need to know if you’d like to homestead.

1. You have much less money than you think.

The rest (http://adaptivecurmudgeon.wordpress.com/2011/07/19/things-you-need-to-know-before-you-buy-the-farm/) of the list.

Heh, pretty good list.  Good links in there too!

But regarding baby skunks...is their defense mechanism armed like adult skunks?  If so, don't they have to be shot so that the spinal cord is severed in order to prevent a reflexive discharge?

(I wonder about such odd things, don't I!)

PS-I would like to use that skunk to beat the hell out of idiots in DC who fail to understand the implications of #13!!!

Baby skunks smell just as bad but they're dangerously cute.

Don't overthink it.  But if you choose to fire you must make it dead fast.

1. Aim well.
2. Double tap.
3. See #1.
4. Even with a perfect shot a certain amount of smell is unavoidable.

Initially I used a .22 but I've had better luck with a 20 gauge.  Get close and make it count.

Your mileage may vary.

Hint: A loud radio running 24/7 for a few days might get them to vacate.  Electricity is cheap and skunks apparently hate top 40.

Heh, good to know AC.

The Top 40 will probably drive me away too though!
