He should have made clear that the tuition thing is a state's option. He did fail to land blows and a couple of times when he could have scored he let it drift away.
Romney's such a tell. Right now he's talking to Hannity about Perry and saying that if Perry had known he was going to run for president he would have done things differently.
Romney is saying that Perry is duplicitous but what he is really doing is exposing his own duplicity. In other words 'if I were going to run for president I would do things to promote my winning regardless what I thought right or wrong'.
That exemplifies Romney.
That is exactly why he should not be president.

Allahpundit on Perry’s “you don’t have a heart” moment:

This is a state's issue not a federal issue. A state's college system may do what the state wants to do. The argument about tax dollars is erroneous. The state voted yes for it and the state is paying for it. No federal money is involved with state college tuition. Whether it attracts illegals is debatable. To be eligible one must be enrolled in school for 2 or more years and be on a path to citizenship. I don't think masses are going to run swim across the border so that they may enroll in high school for two years, sign up for the path to citizenship, then enroll in college. They come across the border to be ditchdiggers, bussboys, landscapers, and such. The others came across the border for the freebies and Ron Paul pretty well covered that.

I did watch the debate (while doing office work so no blogging).
My opinion:
Ron Paul and Huntsman were their usual douche selves. Huntsman gave one of the most ridiculous non-answers that I have ever heard at the beginning of the debate. Made me wonder if he wasn't paying attention and didn't know what the question was. With all the crap going on with Israel and the Palestinians I was surprised that no one baited RP with a question on it. Lucky for him because he can't help himself when it comes to defending our enemies.
Perry cannot handle a debate atmosphere. His position on immigration is completely unacceptable. For me, it's a deal-breaker. Which is not to say that I don't understand the in-state tuition for illegals issue...I do. I don't agree with it but I understand it. And that is despite Perry's complete and total inability to explain it to the audience. Why couldn't he just say that 1) this is a state issue, 2) it was voted for by the legislature overwhelmingly and 3) my veto would have been over-ruled anyway? His fumbling of this explanation just made the whole thing worse. I would have respected his performance tonight a lot more if he could have just laid off of attacking Romney. On the positive side he was one of the few candidates who seemed to try hard to actually answer questions posed.
Romney is a huge liar. He lied about a lot of stuff and didn't get called on hardly any of it. Why? The media, sure, if they are in the tank for him as they seem to be. But the other candidates could have but didn't challenge him on his crap. Very irritating. How come he gets to skate on RomneyCare (it's a state issue) and Perry takes the hit for the in-state tuition for illegals thing?
Bachmann dodged the "Gardasil=instant retards" question...blamed it on the imaginary mother of instant retard. I guess the reason that no one went after her was that she has lost so much support in the last week that there isn't much left to win in terms of stripping away more of her support. Anyway, she seemed almost desperate at times to try and claw her way back to relevance..."Excuse me but I know something about Cuba!" She hammered Perry on his connections to Merck and got away with the fact that she has received money from just about every pharmaceutical company except for Merck...Perry should have slapped her down with that but wasted the opportunity.
Gary Johnson (remind me again why he is there) and his one big moment was all that the FNC people took away from the debate. Problem is that Limbaugh did the exact same joke on his show (http://www.rushlimbaugh.com/daily/2011/09/22/quotes_the_big_voice_on_the_right) earlier today. Johnson shamelessly stole it. A lot of people listen to Rush and they will know who said it first. He should have credited Rush. Anyway, without that "big joke" he was totally forgettable.
Santorum also looked kind of desperate, at one point getting into a semi-shouting match with (was it Romney?). He shouldn't be flailing like this. It's undignified and, worse, un-presidential.
This is the second debate in a row where I have come away with the thought that Gingrich and Cain looked the most reasonable of the lot. Cain, I think, would make a good president but I don't see him getting much traction. I hope that I am wrong on that. Gingrich I have mixed feelings about. I think he is pretty damn sharp...seems way smarter than most of the other candidates...but on the other hand he has zero exec experience and we all know how that works out. Plus, he's mainly an idea guy...big ideas. I am not convinced that he has the discipline to get any of them off of the drawing board and into law.
Sadly, if I was forced to put money down (right now, today) on who I think the nominee is going to be, I would pick Romney as the guy who is going to come out on top. Perry could have been that guy but now I don't see it happening. His intransigence on immigration is his undoing. I am not a Romney fan at all but at this point, barring something else happening, I think that he is going to win. He is this year's McCain apparently.
Sure hope that Cain can somehow pull off a miracle, though.

They are making me have strong aversions to most of the candidates. And that's not what I want. I want to be able to support someone, to say, "This one is the best and I'm gonna send their campaign some money," kind of support. Instead I get the feeling that I'm going to be saying, "Wow, this candidate sucks least...sure hope they can win." Plus, "If they do win I sure hope they don't turn out to be an establishment douche who really screws the pooch and makes me embarrassed that I voted for them."

Further thought on Perry...I got annoyed with him right out of the gate when he refused to give any kind of a jobs/economy plan at all. Instead he falls back on the, "We're just gonna do what I did in Texas," schtick. Huh? You've been an announced candidate for how long and still have nothing concrete to say about the most pressing presidential issue since the freaking Cold War? What is this? Laziness? Dog ate his homework? I don't understand this lack of seriousness at all.

What does Mitt believe and what will he do?
Romney is a duplicitous bitch. Talking to Hannity he says Perry would have done things differently if he had know he was going to run for president. What is Romney doing? What is he saying? He is exposing himself as a prostitute saying he will plan years ahead and do whatever is necessary to achieve his goal (Isn't this what Obama did?) of being president.
He will do or avoid doing whatever is necessary regardless what he personally believes to insure a safe history as a candidate. That's what he said Perry should have done. He just told the world he is a fraud.
A person in the position of authority who conducts himself in disregard of his present responsibility in order to secure future advancement is an offense to true public service and that is Romney's advocacy. That leaves one with two questions, what does Mitt Romney believe and what will he do? The answer is simple. He believes nothing, he prostitutes himself before the alter of appearance and he will sell you out.

Mm hmm. Mark Levin made an important point on his Thursday night radio show. He said that the Republican establishment wants to create a clear front-runner right now, before all those pesky primary voters have their say.

Yup. As I said in the chat thread, this was my first big exposure to Perry aside from the hype and sound-bytes. He was more of an "idea" than a candidate to me until last night. I. Was. Not. Impressed. In. The. Least.
I think we'll see a leveling out of the candidates rather than one pulling ahead. I think Romney will stay the front-runner. And I think the conservative base is getting the strong sense that they are about to get McCained all over again.
If I had to guess - and this is pure speculation - I would say that Palin has been waiting for the conservative base to come to this conclusion on its own. Now that Perry is shown to be anything but the super-candidate that everyone presumed him to be, her long-ago stated criteria is fulfilled: she will get in the race if there is not another candidate with the constitutional conservative credentials in the race who can beat Obama.
I think it is dawning on the conservative electorate at this very moment that there is not a constitutional conservative in the race who can beat Obama.
If I had to speculate further, I would guess that Palin will jump in, triggering Donald Trump to jump in as a third-party stalking horse for Obama, offering what appears to be Perry's brash style with Romney's business chops.

I disagree on Trump getting in. I don't think he has the stomach for campaigning. It's too much associating with the riffraff for him. I picture him going through a lot of hand sanitizer.
I am not sure that Palin will get in at all. Although she would probably poll well at the outset (and that is, of course, important), she has zero organization in place for a run. A Facebook page is not enough. Not at this stage. We are only a few months away from the Iowa caucuses and the New Hampshire primary. The resources necessary for a primary run (campaign staff) are now scarce and the time for fund-raising is short. She had all of the time in the world to properly prepare these things and did not. So...I will be somewhat surprised if she enters the race at this point.
And if you want to really be scared for our party keep an eye on RP's polling. The guy is a total lunatic and introduced himself last night as a "top tier" candidate. Because of his lunatic base he will probably have enough money to hang on to the bitter end as he did last time around. If the MFM wants to meddle (and you know they do) it will do so through this clown. They will hide his most crazy stuff (especially the Jewish thing) as long as possible in order to make him look reasonable. There is no other reason he is being taken seriously at this point in the race. He is the Republican version of Lyndon LaRouche.
As to the idea that there is not a constitutional conservative in the race who can beat O'Bama...I don't think this is necessarily true. O'Bama is a presidential disaster of unprecedented proportions. Any one of the opposing candidates can beat him (yes, even the lunatic) because after another year of his ridiculous behavior the voters will take anyone. And as bad as some of these clods are, any one of them would be better than President Golfsalot. Remember, a lot can happen in a year...have we seen anything that could reasonably lead you to believe that somehow O'Bama will get better at this job? I'm not convinced that we have seen the worst yet.

I guess that depends on how loosely or tightly one defines "constitutional conservative". I only see three, maybe four of them who qualify according to my definition. Ron Paul, Gary Johnson, Herman Cain, and Michele Bachmann. They can all make the case for those conservative bona fides.
But I don't think it is a given that when it comes down to a choice, any of them can necessarily beat Obama. He is a disaster of unmitigated proportion. But he is the incumbent, and he is the hard Left's man. Despite grumblings now, when push comes to shove, you know he has the media in his pocket, and a billion dollars will be spent on him. The candidate who opposes him must be strong and have broad appeal. Bachmann is going down in flames. Johnson is an also-ran. Cain cannot get traction, and has made some huge missteps in message control. Paul is Paul.
I think the argument can be made that of the constitutional conservatives in the race, there is a great risk that Obama would beat any of them. The only people I see in the race now who seem likely to beat Obama are not constitutional conservatives.
