That was pure torture. I would rather get hit with CS gas again before listening to that for a second time.

OK......someone help me out. What the heck was that 30 year old rapper doing in the video? Kind of looked perved to me.
I mean...Please!!!!! You have a bunch of teeny boppers dancing with braces then they cut to some thirty something guy rappin in his cruiser.
I'm just sayin......
On a side note, she sounds like a female version of Johnny Bravo...
-
Ok, just in case anyone's interested - and to answer miltrainer's question. The Black rapper dude is a producer. Apparently he and his recording studio partner have set up a package deal for parents who want to invest in a full-blown recording session/video-shoot/promo package for their kids. The producers write and record the music, and the teens sing the lyrics.
This girl, Rebecca Black had this ridiculously bubble-gummy pop song placed on YouTube, and within days, she's got about 18,000,000 views and counting - mostly by word-of-mouth on social media - and as of yesterday, this song was the #54 best selling song on iTunes, probably higher today.
In our fame = celebrity culture, this torturous little melody is gonna make her famous, even if it is only for 15 minutes.
-
Okay, but that's it all it gets, 15 minutes.
In the meantime, I'm hijackin' yer Friday thread.

Someone needs to pull her aside and tell her that she has no talent.
I had to keep looking but no, she didn't have a clothespin on her nose while she was "singing."
(Aw c'mon, trap...you have to say something positive about her song. Don't be so critical.)
Oh, alright. If we ever have another big siege/standoff where some really nasty and violent thugs are holed up inside a compound then we can loop this at an extremely loud volume level until they crawl outside with blood streaming from their eardrums begging us to shut it off. It might even work to ward off space aliens, vampires and werewolves.
So there, it may have its uses.

For some reason I don't believe that the Buckinghams are really playing their instruments. Note that the "drummer" is obscured as much as possible by the lead singer.
OK, there's a closeup of a pair of hands playing an organ solo, but there's no evidence linking those hands to the person whose hands are concealed behind the box that may or may not be an organ.
The horn section must have been just out of the shot off to one side.

Video and audio, back then for sure, is not done at the same time. They do each separately then the engineer/producers put them together. If it's live it's done as what is referred to today as lip sink. Live performance, actual, was rare.
The "set" would necessarily have to be as secure as a recording booth.

I know, but this video really redlined my BS meter. They really look like they're using their instruments as props.
I'm not a musician, so I can't vouch for the guitar and bass player. Maybe IDP can fill us in. I've never seen a "drum kit" quite like that, though. One bass drum and one tom-tom? And the guy is standing. How is he playing the bass drum, by telepathy?
And prove to me that there's actually a keyboard behind that box. ;D

No question that they're lip-synching - badly. As far as whether they actually know how to play their instruments, it's hard to tell. They certainly aren't making any effort to make it appear as if they're actually playing the song. Not even during the keyboard solo, where they show the hands, do the hands match the notes being played. And you never see the guitar player's left hand, only rigorous strumming that doesn't fit what you hear. Standing drum kits were unusual, but more common in those days. But the drummer's motions have no relation whatsoever to what the drums are doing. He actually "hits" air-cymbals several times. The bass player is the only one who looks comfortable with the instrument. The way he's holding it, the angle of his right wrist is very typical for bass players. But there again, you only get very brief glimpses at the left hand.
Jury's out on whether they CAN play the song. But no question that they are NOT coming close to going through he motions to make it appear as if they are playing the song correctly.
-
Thanks for clearing that up, IDP.
I know that lip-synching was commonplace for TV appearances back in the 60s. I remember seeing a photo of the Beatles on a TV show where there were no amps or wires on stage. They were holding electric guitars that were not connected to anything. But we know that they could play their instruments, or at least go through the motions in that case.

All right, how's this for a palate cleanser? I saw this at American Digest awhile back, and recently dug it up for a comment at Transterrestrial Musings. The drummer, Joe Morello, died a few days ago at age 82.
This was a 1964 TV appearance, and I'm pretty sure they weren't lip-synching. Watch it in full-screen mode.
Adventures in Music 04 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oRYKJCT1uhk#)

That is definitely a live performance. One cool thing about that is the consistency of meter from beginning to end. Meter is one of those things that separates bad drummers from good, and good from great (meter being measured in beats-per-minute and time-division consistency throughout). A drummer's meter can make an entire band sound locked-in tight, or elastic and disjointed, no matter how great the rest of the musicians are. A drummer has to have at least some meter ability, or songs inevitably begin at one pace and end at another (see; Lars Ulrich, Metallica for a quintessential example of horrendous live-performance meter).
This cat Joe Morello maintains meter in a 5/4 song (very unusual time signature) throughout all the free-form improv riffing and even a drum solo, and when the song and its identifiable melody kick back in towards the end, you can A/B between the beginning and the end and there is absolutely no variation in the meter. Without verifying with some of my audio software I would say that it is exact to the beats-per-minute. (I have impeccable meter, and can hear the slightest variations)
-
Yeah, no lip-synching, check.
Not a bad drummer though...but as far as drums go, a few years later, this may be the one I remember the best...6:30 mark of first link...

I think “Friday” is popular with the 10-to-14-year-old crowd specifically because its lyrics are completely innocent and unsophisticated. Kids are sick of being barraged with sexuality and violence and cynicism. At last, for the first time in a long time, a pop song for kids is not about humping or angst. Kids just want to be kids! And Rebecca Black is their new guide.
I'll take it.

It depends on a few factors. What kind of contract does she have with the producers? I'm relatively sure their deal would include the flat fee she paid them plus a percentage of whatever the song takes in via digital download. She doesn't make anything off youtube views, but the song peaked on iTunes somewhere around number 19 @ ¢.99 a pop. It's at # 42 now - still huge. That's a dollar for every download, minus iTunes fees, minus producers percentage, PLUS all other digital downloads from all other outlets such as CDBaby, etc. It'll probably at least amount to a good college fund.
It also depends on her parent's willingness and the producers savvy at capitalizing on this phenomenon. But if I were her parents, I'd be looking for the end of this right about now, before any damage is done to the future of their daughter. She's being subjected to public cruelty right now, and they should be seeking a way to tamp it down, and looking for the exit.

I'm w/ you, Mr. Infinito, some P.O.S. will likely try something asinine.
As far as her talent...well, there are many other talentless hacks makinjg good dough, so if this is her chance to cash in, great! She ain't hurting nobody.
-
Yeah, if people don't like her singing or music, so what? The short answer is don't listen to it. And not to say jerks and clowns have never existed before, but it sure seems like with the advent of the digital age that people feel the need to go out of their way to be a jackass and advertise it all over the web. So I would be shoicked if some foolishness doesn't happen, best she and her crew prepare accordingly. So I'll just wish her good luck!

Arms So Freezy: Rebecca Black's "Friday" As Radical Text (http://www.theawl.com/2011/03/arms-so-freezy-rebecca-blacks-friday-as-radical-text)
She offers the camera a hostage's smile, forced, false. Her smoky eyes suggest chaos witnessed: tear gas, rock missiles and gasoline flames. They paint her as a refugee of a teen culture whose capacity for real subversion was bludgeoned away somewhere between the atrocities of Kent State and those of the 1968 Democratic Convention, the start of a creeping zombification that would see youthful dissent packaged and sold alongside Pez and Doritos.
“Look and listen deeply,” she challenges. An onanistic recursion, at once Siren and Cassandra, she heralds a new chapter in the Homeric tradition. With a slight grin, she calls out to us: “I sing of the death of the individual, the dire plight of free will and the awful barricades daily built inside the minds of all who endure what lately passes for American life. And here I shall tell you of what I have done in order to feel alive again.”
She moves from a home made vexing by obligations to the bus stop and there, in the public sphere, appears to find freedom from authoritarian programming in the form of a Mercedes convertible filled with high-status peers.
They stop and invite her to join them, a moment evoking Fitzgerald's Tender is the Night but with a postmodern twist suggestive of a post-historical amnesia: On this "Friday," it is no longer French leisure but German engineering that promises delivery from the snares of family and self-image.
“Gotta make my mind up,” she sings, overjoyed to finally exert some control over her fate; “Which seat can I take?”
Yet here the discerning viewer notes that something is wrong. Because it is a simple matter of fact that in this car all the good seats have already been taken. For Rebecca Black (her name here would seem to evoke Rosa Parks, a mirroring that will only gain in significance) there is no actual choice, only the illusion of choice.

That is reminiscent of the incident a few years ago, where a physicist wrote a postmodernist deconstruction of modern physics being an act of white male imperialist oppression. The article was published in an academic journal. Then he said, "Uh, hey guys, it was a joke." He used all the right jargon, and the humanities folks bought it hook, line, and sinker.

In another topic the question of what has become of the music industry/is music dead was broached.
Miley's famous father was "discovered" when he was 29 years old.
How many groups or musicians have become famous after they were 25 years old? None come to my mind. Generally the exception presents itself very early.
Billy Ray, the Dixie Chicks, and many others are a product of packaging firms. These firms use the same techniques Karl Rove uses to determine what "product" will earn them the greatest cost/benefit ratio.
They construct an attractive product then they sell it. Music or art may be an accidental by product. The quality in the product comes from professional designers, engineers, arrangers, choreographers, studio musicians and coaches. The product is technically "perfect" but it is not music or art.
It's crap in a shiny package sold to illiterates.

Tonight I went to a local bar where a friend is the DJ. He's been doing it since the late 80s, so it's become sort of a tradition. The crowd is usually small, maybe a dozen, but there are various ages and musical tastes. He takes requests and will play anything from the Grateful Dead to hip-hop to Benny Goodman.
When he started he spun records on turntables, but as times have changed, he now uses a laptop computer with songs stored on an external hard drive. He can download songs he doesn't have and can also play songs on YouTube.
His playlist appears on the screen in iTunes, and at one point while I was talking to him I noticed "It's Friday" was in the list, about two songs ahead. I said, "NO NO NO NO NO! You're not going to play that?!" Turned out he had never heard of it. Some young guys on the other side of the bar had requested it as a joke. I had to explain it to him and tell him the story of how it had become an internet sensation.
Naturally, I requested "It's Sunday" to immediately follow it.

...The song was widely mocked and parodied for its shoestring film clip, banal lyrics and Black's unusual Auto-Tuned singing. It has since racked up 167 million plays on YouTube, making it the most-watched video in the site's history...
That blows my mind.

That blows.

heh-heh. ::hysterical::

It's an absolute crime that a piece of crap gets this kind of attention while other (vastly superior) performers* (http://itsaboutliberty.com/index.php/topic,2058.msg24349/topicseen.html#msg24349) labor in relative obscurity.
*shameless, yet sincere, plug for site owner

Thanks for the plug friend. Labored in relative obscurity. I don't labor it anymore. I had my time, and I got as far as I got, and I'm at peace (except for douchebags selling my CD for $100, but I digress). And as far as superior talent being passed by for something "less" - everyone goes into the music business understanding that is the way it is. Everyone thinks they can be the one to break through. Some can and some can't. Sometimes talent is a factor, and sometimes it isn't. I've seen some really, really good bands not have even the regional success I had. And I've seen some horsecrap bands go much further. It's just how it is.
I wish Rebecca Black the best. I think that in spite of the fact that the song is universally panned, there is something to the phenomenon that deserves attention. I know that EVERY single Friday in the office where I've been freelancing, people can be heard singing that song here and there throughout the day. My wife tells me the same story from her offices - she moves between several different locations throughout the metro. My friends have told me similar stories.
So yeah, the song sucks the big one. But in music and pop culture, that's only part of the story, and in this instance, a rather irrelevant part.

And that's where the "new media" comes in. Reblecha and others have taken advantage of the internet in general, youtube in particular and other avenues to bypass the traditional music industry.
Another (and musically far better) example is the mashup coverband, Rock Sugar (http://www.rocksugarband.com/Default.aspx), doing essentially the same thing but also harnessing social media (Facebook) to promote themselves.
A few years later and Cain's Alibi might have turned out much differently. The talent was definitely there from what I have heard on the album.

That's quite possible. There is no doubt that in the final couple years of my music career, Myspace and the idea of Internet social networking were being discussed and in use by innovative musicians. That is an avenue I never took advantage of. My age, I suppose. I thought the old way was good enough, and "didn't get" all the hubbub around Myspace. We had a website, and that was a stretch for me. Now just a few years later, and a band without a facebook page is at a distinct disadvantage.

So do it now you can sell your own cd.

I'd have to invest in new product up front - minimum 1000 pieces. I do sell mp3s in just about every download outlet there is, which costs me nothing but a consignment fee. I get a check for about $20 every six months or so. Not a revenue stream worth investing in at this point.

I got as far as I got, and I'm at peace
::thumbsup:: That's not a small thing.

I think that's a good thing overall. What with the social networking, consumer electronics, software, and CD burners, local musicians can make and sell their own recordings directly to their fans, entirely bypassing agents, record companies, etc. They can gain popularity both by word of mouth and the internet.
The Grateful Dead were sort of a pre-internet prototype of this. They played lots of gigs every year, but rarely advertised them. They had a phone hotline which fans could call to learn of upcoming dates and venues, and word-of-mouth did the rest. They pretty much sold out everywhere they played. And they didn't discourage fans from making amateur bootleg recordings of their shows, which were widely traded.
Here's another example of a young teen with a homemade YouTube video. I saw this over the weekend at Gerard van der Leun's American Digest site. While she's no threat to Rebecca Black in terms of view numbers, one commenter points out that her cover, which has been out one month, already has more views than the original, posted two years ago. This is serious talent. I love the bluesy lilt of her voice, and she's also very easy on the eyes. I can't get this song out of my head now.
(And I've watched the original. There's no contest.)

That's really cool Rickl - great find. But remember now, Miley Cyrus thinks it should be more difficult to become a star. (http://www.popeater.com/2011/03/31/miley-cyrus-slams-rebecca-black/)

Thanks for that I enjoyed that little girl very much and I'm shipping it everybody on my email list!!

Sounds like a case of sour grapes. So Miley's an old curmudgeon now?
(As far as Rebecca Black's song goes, it did develop a reputation as the "Worst Song EVAH!", so a lot of its views were out of morbid curiosity.)

With today's technology, a fan could go to a band's gig on Saturday night, and on Sunday morning download an MP3 live recording of the show he just saw, for a small fee. The transaction would be entirely between the band and the fan. The "music industry" is no longer necessary.

And that is a very GOOD thing! ::thumbsup::
BTW I liked it. ::cool::

I liked it too.
The music industry isn't dead the business is just changing. As long as we have civilization we'll have music. And, it seems, as always, good music has to be sought.

Okay, well the new one is out and (I didn't think it was possible but) it's worse than "Friday."
Here it is:

Sorry, but this chick can't sing (very well). It's mediocre at best.

This poor kid. I sure hope she's grounded in something other than hopes of being a pop star. Ah heck, whaddoIknow. I'm just an old fart.

Hey, if anyone is qualified to comment on musical talent...

Something about this fresh-faced teen plowing through all the criticism and shooting for her dream in spite of odds and talent working against her makes me smile.
This song is no less inane, but somehow a degree or two less obnoxious.

Everything is so over-filtered, normalized, and plastic sounding now. I can't remember the last time I heard popular music with raw vocal talent, certainly not Top 40 stuff anyway. Of course, I quit paying attention to popular music after high school. I decided to go ahead and make the grumpy old man transition early.

Rebecca or Madonna, no contest.
Rebecca or Lady GaGa, no contest.
Rebecca or Nicki Minaj, no contest.
Those women are all the Devil's advocates, I hope she makes it clean.
Rebecca Black ::thumbsup::

I'm with you, Charles. She found a niche, whether we think she has any talent, and running with it. God bless America.

Just change it to "democrat", then we will have the wider use we require. ;)
