The election is most definitely (despite all of the Herculean effort by the MFM to declare otherwise) shaping up to be a referendum on O'Bongo. The MFM is trying desperately to make it "choice" election where the confused independents are told that they must choose between O'Bongo and his "demonstrably superior wisdom" and Romney's "risky plan" if only they can define what that plan is.
The only problem is that the public is pretty stubbornly moving in the direction of referendum. They just can't get past the horrible economy that O'Bongo has designed and presided over. Stupid public.
So...it really isn't about Romney. It's really about getting rid of a dumbass and Romney just happens to be in the right place at the right time. This is one of those very rare situation where Romney can pretty much play prevent defense for the entire election season and come out a winner. It's his election to lose. All he has to do is look vaguely presidential and not screw up and the job is his. The only real reason to vote against Romney is if he is found to be insane or something.
Do I wish we had someone better than Romney? Of course I do. But that person didn't run. So he is our guy. Sucks but that's the way it is. Even so he is demonstrably several orders of magnitude better than President Downgrade. He actually knows stuff and has documented success at getting things (mostly good things) done. Compare that to the pathetic little narcissist who currently sits in the Oval Office and there really isn't a comparison. But then again it isn't going to be a "choice" or comparison election for most voters. Most voters are in pain or they know someone (or more likely, a LOT of someones) who are in pain and the only way to stop the pain is to get President Zero out of office.
It's a referendum election. A ventriloquist dummy could win given the right marketing.

And another thing...
The quoted article talks of former O'Bongo supporters and fundraisers turning on him and moving toward Romney. You can say a lot about the stupidity of some of the wealthy and most of the "elites" but they do seem to have an uncanny way of picking winners. Especially when the alternative is a demonstrable loser. Most of them either got rich or maintained their wealth by mostly not being stupid with their money.
Not all of them, of course, but a lot of them.
This article could also be a bit of evidence for a preference cascade and paradigm shift amongst the wealthy. Maybe not. Time will tell.

Yes, but the dummy needs to have a fire light under his butt and the dummy needs to tell the Rovian's et al to go bugger themselves...if his handlers are Rovian's one cannot make the assumption that the dummy will automatically defeat the SCoaMF. I would agree that all things being equal this would be a no-brainer, but things are never equal, not in the MFM and not in the GOP.

Yesterday Rush hit on a subject that has bothered me too. As Rush puts it, "people aren't working but they're still eating". People are anesthetized to the economic pain by government money, and it's also more convenient than ever. No queuing up at the unemployment or welfare office, it's all done electronically. Combine this with the fact that even before this mess, we were already approaching a critical mass of Takers. Rush's main argument is that "it's the economy stupid", axiomatic just 20 years ago, is no longer enough to guarantee a defeat for the incumbent who has presided over it. Throw in the massive electoral fraud sure to occur, and I do not have a great feeling about things.

This is one of the things that makes the truth so difficult to convey to others: I think we are in as a bad a depression as we were in the 1930s. But there are a number of things that hide that, there are no long queues at the unemployment office, nor the USDA surplus agricultural product warehouses. Not to mention that we are so much wealthier as a nation now than then, that starvation is not a real issue for almost every American. Especially with the government actively seeking to produce more clients, rather than producers.

I heard that too and I echo the same concerns. I think Rush is right, this election has to be a referrendum on Obama and the future of the nation, the old recipe doesn't work anymore, and the Rovian's love the recipe.
I for one will not be guilty of retaining misplaced hope, I cannot help but see things as they are, not as I wish them to be.
