Title: Do you know your toddler’s "slave footprint"?
Post by: Pandora on September 11, 2012, 04:55:26 PM
The author writes that her kid has 20, (http://www.csmonitor.com/The-Culture/Family/Modern-Parenthood/2012/0911/Do-you-know-your-toddler-s-slave-footprint-Mine-has-20-slaves) according to a .gov website.    ::saywhat::

..... working on this week’s Monitor magazine cover story about sex trafficking, I came across a website supported by the US State Department that lets people find out their “slavery footprint.” Basically, you enter a bunch of information about your lifestyle – the rooms in your house, the sort of food you eat, and so on - and the super easy website shoots back the number of slaves you use, along with other information.

The results are sobering. But so is this: Of my 47 slaves, who is responsible for almost 20?  My toddler.

I should have known I was in trouble when the website started asking me about bath toys. But I saw I was really in for it when I read questions about the number of dresses my 18-month-old baby owns, how many stuffed animals, strollers and soft toys, how many pairs of baby jeans and baby dolls. Every time I clicked – increasingly embarrassed – my slavery count ticked upwards.

Read it if you can stomach it.  (She says we all need less stuff -- it's what's "good for the world".)

The best thing about it are the few comments; one >>>>

Instead of a government website calculating how many slaves we have, how about a private website that calculates how many slaves the government has?  Looks like it's over 300 million and counting,

I wouldn't mind a slave or two. I guess I'd prefer them to have names, instead of numbers though. Ashley, Jennifer, Katie...

 ::thinking::

I need more stuff.

Would a slave by any other name clean the house as neat?

It's the state department, once again, the state department.
The same geniuses that cause us to patronize blood sucking
Pakistan while disdaining India who would rather be our friend
but are given the short end of the stick at every opportunity.

I guess they don't realize that if we had less stuff (or didn't purchase as much stuff) then the economy would really be in a world of hurt.

Talk about slaves ! I recently got a membership with Ancestry.com and traced my male line straight back to the 18th century in Maryland . During a period covering roughly four generations my direct family line owned almost two hundred of the REAL THING ! Oh , for the good old days !  ::danceban:: ;D ::bustamove::

This has come as quite a surprise to me. Like most comfortable and educated Americans, before a few months ago I barely realized that slavery – even as the somewhat more broadly defined “modern day slavery” – still existed. And if I did have a fuzzy idea about the forced labor and human trafficking that exists around the globe, I certainly didn’t think I had any hand in it.  I mean, I buy organic. I walk to the grocery story. I even had one of those "(Product) Red"  campaign Gap T-shirts, before I shrunk it. I’m a “good” consumer.

because she's stupid.  Bet she thinks there's no religious persecution in this country either.

Liberals who think they've discovered some new thing make me  ::puke:: .  China aborts their female babies--think she could work up any concern?
