My husband had a hemorrhagic stroke yesterday.
He was at work when it happened but it took him 2 hours to call me because he didn't realize what was happening to him. He was in the car on the way home and called me to asked if he was talking funny. Yep, I said, you need to go to the ER right now. He couldn't tell me where he was so I guessed and told him what i thought would be the closest hospital ( I knew telling him to pull over and call 9-1-1 wouldn't happen.) and he got himself there with the car's GPS. In the midst of this challenging conversation he starts telling me what he had for breakfast at a restaurant he goes to on Saturday before work. Last night he told me I was wrong when I mentioned it --that's not what he ate and tells me something else entirely. OK, dear.
He's 53 and totally worried he'll get fired now. He's the kind of person who doesn't take a vacation. He does have a stressful job and quite frankly the company does rely on him for a lot. I hope maybe he can be encouraged to manage his stress.
His speech seems better today and he has only slight weakness on the right.

Prayers are forthcoming. Tell your husband to try to relax and think positively - it will work out.
-
Sounds like he got to the ER on time. Good.
Prayers are on the way.

How are the kids doing?

Update?

I was away for the weekend with only my dumbphone and didn't see this til now.
Of course, a prayer now - at this moment - for your husband, you, and your family.

Thanks all. He's doing better today.
He finally was allowed to eat tonight once they were sure he could swallow properly. He's still in ICU until they can be sure the meds he's getting are working to control the high blood pressure. His speech is better though he still shows some weakness on the right but there's no indication from the doctors that that will be a major issue long term. He has an underlying genetic condition that made it all even more exciting--no, not really but it means he got a few extra specialists to visit him and ask the same questions over.
The kids are doing ok. One of my daughters is the go-to girl. She's keeping family and friends updated and is a bit of a counselor too--helping her siblings deal with it. The youngest is crying and worried she won't get to do the same things she's always done with Dad. And although I reassured her he'd still be able to coach softball next year, etc, etc, she won't be reassured until she sees him home and active again. The other two are more quiet about it.
I hope tomorrow he's moved out of ICU to a regular floor because that means he's closer to coming home.
You know we cancelled a vacation a week before going in August because he said he couldn't miss work....

I am so glad for you all that your husband is doing better, LV. May he continue to improve until this is just an unfortunate memory, but one that informs him that one can work himself into an early grave.
Still ::praying::

Hopefully a speedy recovery is in process! ::praying::
It's nice to have a "go-to" sibling to help share the burden. ::thumbsup::
You have a good family, may your time together always be joyful and plentiful!

For a speedy recovery. It sounds like it could have been much worse than it was.

Hope he continues to improve. ::praying::

Things are getting better. He was moved to a new room and taken off the IV meds and now they are trying different meds to find the right one. His speech has improved a lot and the weakness in the right isn't as pronounced. All in all things are good. I'm so happy. It could have been so much worse. He's progressing so well that he probably won't need any follow up therapy. According to one of the docs it's likely that in the long term any residual effects won't be noticed unless he's tired or stressed in which case he could find his speech affected.
Interesting to hear him describe how it feels to speak now. He says he can think of the word but when it comes out he realizes he didn't say it right. Remember learning in school about blended sounds like "sh"? Those give him the most trouble. But as he focuses more on saying them correctly he can do them. I'm sure with time that he'll not have any trouble with them.
Thanks for the prayers.

Still praying, ma'am, nevertheless. Consider it a backup generator.

May the positive progress continue. ::praying::

Lady Virginia,
Your husband is in my prayers. He is my age and it hits home.
When he gets a clean bill of health get him on a exercise program. If you need any help please let me know. I have a masters in exercise physiology. Even though at the present time I don't do as much research and personal training at this point of my life that I would like as my real job, which is unrelated leaves me little time, I do try to help people who have had health issues get into exercise regimes to improve their health. Our bodies where designed by God to have amazing recuperative powers especially when exercise is used to help with the healing process.

Thanks, I'll keep it in mind. My youngest has already got him to agree to go for a walk with her after work everyday. I figure that's a start!
Anyway, he's home now. And the last few days feel like a month. I was disappointed that no one talked to him about changing his diet/lifestyle. I've tried to drop hints but since I'm not an expert I don't think he'll give it much thought.
Thanks everyone for the prayers. I truly believed they helped.

Listening to the spouse is one of the hardest things to do in life. I'm speaking for me, anyway.
Glad he's doing better. We'll still keep the prayers headed your way.

Progress report?

Better everyday.
Doc says by 6 weeks or so the obvious effects (speech, etc) should no longer be noticable.
Plus what I'm happy about is he's slowly becoming interested in exercising and eating better :) AND he's trying to lessen his stress...
and his brother has suddenly gotten interested in his own health and my brother went back on his blood pressure meds
Thanks for asking!

Good news, we'll keep the prayers coming! ::thumbsup::
