I admit, I am a closet Hall & Oates fan. And even for those who never really got into their music at the time it was popular, one must acknowledge the reality that for several years running, these guys were a pop music powerhouse: 6 #1 hits, and 34 Billboard top 100 singles, 7 Platinum albums, and 6 Gold albums.

Well, I stumbled across a program on cable last night, and I was frankly blown right the heck away.

Daryl Hall has a recording studio/soundstage in his home, and since 2007, he has had a webcast program called Live From Daryl's House (http://www.livefromdarylshouse.com). The premise is, he invites other musicians to jam; a few of their tunes, a few of his tunes.

The fella I caught on last night's show was named Butch Walker. Never heard of him before. He was awesome - helluva singer - and the chemistry between him and Hall and Halls band was great - and Hall's band is excellent.

Hall still has that soulful voice (for a White guy), and still has the chops. You can hear that his voice is older, but he hits the notes and does it well. He's definitely the elder statesman in the room.

The performance is as flawless as live can be - excellent vocal harmonies in particular - and the post-production is top-tier - no buried instruments or non-existent background vocals.

Aside from the music, they banter, opine on each others career and talents, prepare food and eat a meal, and basically just give you a window into their entire jam session.

I tell ya man... that song posted above was the first thing I heard when I tuned into the TV program. The moment when Daryl Hall kicks in with his vocal at 3:40 gives me chills every time. Especially coming in after that mellow synth solo, which was preceded by that young man's excellent vocal. Even though I've never heard the song before last night, when Hall starts singing I'm suddenly 17 again, in the back seat of my '69 Plymouth Fury 3.

Ahem... with Mrs. IDP, of course.  ::angel::

And as talented as Butch Walker is, you can tell as he watches Hall sing that he's pretty much in awe.

Gunsmith and I were cleaning up after dinner and what comes on the TV but an ad, for I know not what, but the music is "You Make-a My Dreams Come True".  Haven't heard H&O tunes anywhere in a dog's age, and there it was.

The Daryl Hall song I like best is when he went solo in the early 80's...a number called, "Dreamtime."

And I never really cared for Hall & Oates until I got hooked on that song. I'm still not crazy about them but I do now appreciate them.

It's funny how as I have aged I have broadened my musical interest. Example: I confess that I actually like ABBA now whereas in the seventies and eighties I thought that they were ridiculous. Well, they were ridiculous to look at when they were performing but I now have the perspective to realize that they were incredibly talented as both songwriters and performers. Go figure.

As a lifelong fervent Joe Walsh fan - and having gained a new appreciation for Hall and Oates - watching the above cuts is almost like Shangri La.

LFDH has become must-see-TV for me.
