IIRC this is almost a routine occurance in these parts in Spring & Fall, is it not?

People need fog lights and need to slow down!

Most cars have the fog lights but the intelligence to slow down when you can't see fifty feet in front of you seems to be missing. I understand being in a hurry to get back home but shouldn't safely be added to that? ::doh::

Fog in the Appalachians is very common, especially when it wedges up against the front range of the Blue Ridge, but pile ups like this are definitely not. It's sort of like with guns, there are very few genuine accidents but a whole lot of negligent acts. People just refuse to leave anything like adequate following distance. Even when you make a point of it yourself, all it does is invite people to slip into the gap you've left between you and the car in front. People just seem to think it's perfectly ok to be driving 70-80 mph down a highway with less than a car length of space in front of them.

And I've observed there is a particular breed of moron who actually becomes more belligerent when weather or road conditions are bad. It's as if they're trying to demonstrate what a badass they are, that snow and ice might compel you to slow down, but not this tough-ass! Can't tell you how many times I've been driving on icy roads with some jackass crawling up my rear bumper. These are the types who have some primitive need to be in front, so it actually doesn't matter how fast you go, they're going to ride your ass regardless. Then when they finally go around, they end up going about the same speed you were anyway.

Nothing illustrates human stupidity faster than putting them into an automobile.

What used to be a privilege is now a right, and letting a bunch of illiterate immigrants free reign on our roads doesn't help lower the average driver IQ...when government offices have signage in languages other than native English you know you are on the road to Hell.

"And common sense is ringing out the bells
This ain't no technological breakdown
Oh no, this is the road to Hell"

Yup, that's about it.

I spent my 8th-12th grade years near there. I remember one time, driving down Fancy Gap on U.S. 52 from the Blue Ridge Parkway in a heavy fog. It was one of the most frightening experiences in my entire life.
