I was chatting with my brother in CT this morning and he told me about a radio station he listens to that has accepted ads from al--Jazeera. There are those who are advocating boycotting the station. He wasn't comfortable with that. He said we have free speech in this country. I pointed out that free speech is a two way street. Citing free speech is often used as a muzzle to shut up opposition. I think that the opposition has a right to voice their opinion too and convince others of their opinion. That's the way it works. He seemed to think it wouldn't be "right" to shut a radio station down as if that was limiting speech. I explained we have the right to try to convince others of our point of view too. I also reminded him that radio stations are businesses and they will do what they need to do to stay on air.
He identifies as a conservative.

Your brother is fortunate to have such an enlightened sister.

Indeed he does. People are often confused about the differences between what people may do and what government may/not do.
A court in New Mexico ruled against a photographer who asserted his right to not photograph a homosexual "wedding". WRONG!
A bakery in Oregon is closing its doors because militant homosexuals have so threatened and intimidated their clients and suppliers, essentially a boycott, that they choose to not continue. It's outrageous on the face of it, but not wrong in a legal sense.

Thanks.( I wasn't fishing for a compliment. ) I was really interested in the conversation and at the same time fascinated that even he who thinks of himself as smart/educated has been corrupted by PC BS.
Free speech means nothing without opposition.

Censure is a necessary part of Free Speech.
Al Jazerra has every right to peddle thier biased BS. And others have every right to boycott, ignore or refute that BS as they choose.
Ben Franklin wrote a wonderful essay on the subject (http://teachingamericanhistory.org/library/document/on-censure-or-backbiting/)
What the left has systemically done is convinced people they do NOT have the right to express their own opinion, if that opinion is considered "discriminatory" - its a legal version of "if you can't say anything nice, don't say anything at all" and if you do, prepare to loose your job or find yourself in court.
Jim Crow laws were wrong because they MANDATED a specific racial separation to be enforced with govt guns. Leftists, being they way they are, of course see no problem using government guns to mandate a racial integration with Govt guns. Ultimately its because they don't want you to be able to censure anyone- because that makes them free from the consequences of being an ass.

He seems to be for free speech for the other guy but not himself?? Isn't it a bit odd.

Yes, but I think he was afraid he'd would be limiting someone else's free speech.

Free speech is not a license to spread lies, they may have a legal right to say whatever they want, people are equally free not to accept it if they find it erroneous, deceitful or slanderous. People boycott everyday with their purchases, their movement, their associations...some might call this selective discrimination or free will, and at present it has not been completely driven from the land, so feel free to engage anywhere anytime.

LV, ask him if he supports "buycotts".
And, with all sincerity, good luck getting him to see the wisdom of your original argument. It is very difficult to get an adult to at least listen and acknowledge the wisdom in a contrary opinion, especially an uncomfortable one. Even after the "Oh, yeah!" moment, it takes us a while to come around completely.

I'll ask about the buycotts. I don't know. I was surprised at what he said earlier so I guess I have no idea!
I sort of think he was seeing what I had to say but then he had to leave and I can't help but wonder if he just decided to NOT change his view later.

What if it was NAMBLA buying commercial time? Would that be different? If so, why?
Free speech is indeed a right. Like all rights, it also comes with the potential for consequences...such as large groups of people deciding they aren't going to patronize the dissemination of things they disagree with. I've encountered some variation of this misunderstanding before. People seem to think that the right to free speech also grants the right to an audience. It does not.

Hey you have no right to censure me!
You have no right to judge me!
Anthony Weiner is a typical liberal. Ready to judge everyone else bad or evil and use govt force against them, but don't dare tell him to his face what a low life scum he is (http://hotair.com/archives/2013/09/04/video-national-laughingstock-sick-and-tired-of-you-judgmental-losers-heckling-him/)
Anthony Weiner Explodes In Shouting Match With Jewish Voter (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iDJA4h8T0D0#)

I read the transcript. Weiner epitomizes the hypocrisy and hubris of the "nonjudgmental" left.
-
What a little bitch he is he's suddenly found God. These people need to be judged as often as possible.Shameless ass.

And only God is allowed to Judge him. He can be as vile as he wants and unless you are perfect, you can't judge him.
I wish that guy would have said it - No I am not perfect- just way better than you are. Where do I get the morals to judge you? From God. God said what you did was wrong. And if this business is between you, your wife and your god- then why the hell do I know about it? If you don't want to be judged don't run for public office- because when you do you are suggesting you are fit to govern us, and that would suggest you need to be at least as moral as we are. The point of fact is you are a worthless egotistical pervert.

Kind of ties back into what we were discussing here: http://itsaboutliberty.com/index.php?topic=8741.msg104887#msg104887 (http://itsaboutliberty.com/index.php?topic=8741.msg104887#msg104887)
i.e., how all forms of shame and embarrassment (except for transgressions against PC dogma) have been systematically eliminated from the culture, under the idea that any form of judgmentalism is bad. In so many words, all of this can be found in the infamous "Goals of the Communist Party" that were read into the Congressional record back in the early 1960s.

College professors usually fall into this category.

Weiner will be judged and he knows it however that being said he certainly knows by now after advocating for the devil, he'll be judged by Satan. He has to have realized he's not going to be with God at this point either that or he's terribly mentally ill and not just liberal. ::pokeineye::

All libiots appear mentally disturbed to us normal folk! Some more so than others.
