Now mount it on a drone/turret with facial recognition software and have it scan that beam over intruder's faces. Don't know how to deal with the swat team in your yard? They are a lot easier to shoot when they are blind. ...

That's really the thing that's been holding back directed energy weapons, the lack of easily portable power. Supposedly it's now possible to put destructive lasers on ships and large aircraft, and I think I read about the Navy now fielding a test platform of a destroyer-mounted laser.

A different wavelength would be needed. Something more in the ultraviolet. You really don't want the beam of light from your weapon giving away your location. You could of course still use a lower power targeting laser
