The film is based on the book Truth And Duty, Mapes’ accounting of the affair, and will follow the course of the story from its origins to the point that it nearly took down CBS. Blanchett stars as Mapes, with Redford portraying Rather.
So "It's a lie but should be true" has made it to film?

No kidding.
I would like someone (anyone) to tell me why any right thinking person would ever subject themselves to this flick. There are two certainties associated with it:
1. It won't be truthful.
2. It will be offensive to the right.
Why would anyone bother to go to all the effort to concoct this dreck? It can't be to rehabilitate his character - nothing that doesn't begin with a profound apology for being a liar and a jerk will ever accomplish that.
No matter - you're right - it'll bomb and somebody is gonna lose a pile of dough.
