Heard this on the radio...just 69...barely made it to his birthday (same birth date as Elvis)...
Back in my day if somebody had held up tickets for Alice Cooper or David Bowie and asked me to choose which one I wanted to go see, I would have taken the Alice Cooper tickets...but there is no doubt Bowie was talented, odd, but he liked being unconventional, but talented.
I remember seeing him on Don Kirshner's Rock Concert...to this day he may be the only adult man who made such extensive use of onesies.

It was his unconventional style & song-writing wizardry that made him my main rock guy. His ability to craft really effed up guitar sounds (usually executed by icons like Mick Ronson & Earl Slick) was fantastic...but only really superb when mixed & produced by Tony Visconti.

I think he pretty much mocked religion - but a study of his lyrics would lead me to believe that he read large portion of the Bible & drew a portion of his lyrics from concepts therein. I once did a presentation, and corresponding paper, for a Public Speaking class in college, contrasting Bowie's 'Cracked Actor' with Robert Frost's 'Provide Provide', which was surprisingly well received by the professor (who was also the head of the English Literature department).
Rest in peace, Mr. Jones.

Bowie seems more Agnostic than Deist to me, a local morning show in town here aired an interview clip of him...he basically said he "believes in a 'higher energy' " but he does not want to "apply a name like 'God' to it".
More example of his intentional unconventional persona.

He was a weird chap and his music was even weirder, however, some titles are classics and would be lacking without them. RIP Dave

Cooper I could understand (even if his music wasn't at the top of my list), Bowie I couldn't.
I found out years later that the only tracks he did that I cared for were because Stevie Ray Vaughan laid down the guitar parts.
The sexually ambiguous stuff turned me off and as a consequence I never paid much attention to him.
I guess that I should offer him a tip of the hat and commend him for blazing trails or something.

SRV was a rare talent...and died way too soon...I cannot imagine how much more he could have produced had he lived. :'(
The ambiguous stuff always turned me off as well, never a big fan of Rocky Horror, never understood the appeal of any androgynous stuff...I just took that to mean I definitely lacked gay tendencies and thanked God for it.

Ever enigmatic. Bowie knew he was succumbing quickly to liver cancer. The naming of his final album, Blackstar, was his good-bye.

Came down my Facebook feed. I did know Rick Wakeman played the iconic mellotron part on Space Oddity. I didn't know he played the whole Hunky Dory album.

Hunky Dory was when Bowie started to get "weird." Even so, it's amazing something so conventional as this piano part can lie underneath the weirdness.
