Over the past few months, my husband and I have kept an eye on the store shelves in our area. We don’t shop daily or even weekly, but the trend of increasingly bare shelves has been incredibly disturbing. This made me curious as to what others have been experiencing. As a member of various online prepping communities, I see a lot of conversations and concerns, but one thing that has stood out to me is the amazing number of people chiming in to report sparse or bare shelves or just not being able to find a specific item they like.

I have been seeing this for months now.

I must admit, I didn't think I had seen any, but of course when I think of shelves in the old Soviet Block...what Venezuela looks like now...but now that I think of it there are certain items (I don't always pay attention if it is something I don't look for or routinely buy) that have empty spots here an there. Not a lot, if I had to put a number on my local grocer...maybe 5% of the store? I always chalked it up to temporary runout of something popular/popular size, something put on special sale or perhaps a recall item that was pulled. Given the bacterial scares and pre-processed contamination scares that pop up here and there...didn't seem unusual. Certainly not at hardcore socialist levels yet. Any by me its scattered, still see plenty of canned goods and all that others stuff at my store.
Trucker issues and regulatory PITA's I believe. We have yet to see the runnup in gas prices at the pump, and the Venezuela impact will come as we get into Spring and warmer weather.
Sidebar re: Gas - This helps offset Venezuela impact. (https://oilprice.com/Energy/Energy-General/Texas-Oil-Production-Breaks-New-Record.html)
I wish they would say where they are seeing this, not sure if the site name indicates a certain DC area, but I wonder if this is regional? And given his closing statement it seems a warning and a call for info to help determine the severity.

We witnessed this in response to the recent snow scare. The Weather Liars do all they can to amp up the panic on the impending forecast and then some wonder why people panic.
All across the area there were runs on the more perishable items like milk and bread and the boob-toob stations dutifully showed endless videos of the empty shelves, complete with ominous narration about the end-times.
Because I was prepared (and thus not an idiot) I did all my prep work ahead of time and didn't need to rush around.
As an aside, I did go shopping yesterday afternoon for Pad Thai makings and the shelves were magically restocked with all my favorite goodies. Oh, and as an aside to my aside, a section of the ceiling fell in right next to me as I was shopping. A foot of snow plus a flat roof = snow load = fractured roof and massive leaks.

No damage to you, I hope.

Nope - hit me in the head where I'm least likely to suffer damage ;'}

The only thing I've seen shelves empty of is rock salt.
::snoshovel::
A persistent layer of ice on my driveway.

I thought ahead on that...got one full bucket and about a 1/4 left of the first.
Now, the massive icicles that have joined two levels of roof got me nervous...they break off the wrong direction I could lose some window panes...and too dangerous to get at safely...

Not a lot f empty shelves in NJ (Wegmans sometimes runs out of their private brand of Bran cereal 😲). And I have 3/4’s of a bag of Chemical melt (porch & walkway) as well as rock salt (for the driveway).
Blueberries (love ‘em in cereal) have been plentiful & a decent price.
I did noctice that the Victoria Secrets store in the mall’s shelves were, uhm . . . bare. 😜

You can't reach them from the windows you're worried about?

Maybe. Too steep & slippery to go out on...but if I open the window, pop the screen out...I might be able to reach some with my hockey stick...
Then again, I make a mistake it's on me...maybe if nature insurance would pay...
Still cold so I got time to monitor...

A nice, 45 degree day, yesterday, helped me get rid of that problem, anyway. ::thumbsup::
Back below zero, this morning, but with a dry driveway.
