Title: Providence RI Fires ALL 1,926 of its teachers

Providence RI Fires ALL 1,926 of its teachers (http://nation.foxnews.com/culture/2011/02/25/all-teachers-fired-providence-ri)

When it comes to government budgets, there are cuts, and then there are cuts. The Providence, Rhode Island school district definitely took budget cutting to the extreme when it sent a letter out to its teachers on Tuesday: you're all fired.

With a projected deficit of nearly $40 million for the school department, Superintendent Tom Brady told teachers the budget situation was dire. So dire, it seems, that the department sent dismissal notices to all 1,926 of its teachers, according to CBS affiliate WPRI.

So, they'll hire back the good ones when the time comes.

I'm having a hard time finding the down side here ...............

And this illustrates another big problem with their unions, aside from the fiscal issues: it's virtually impossible to get rid of bad teachers. I could almost understand all the bellyaching going on right now if they were consistently producing a world class product. But look at what they produce, 2/3 of 8th graders not being at acceptable levels of literacy, and students so stunted in math and science that they routinely get trounced by students in Third World countries!

But those kids sure do have great self esteem though, don't they? That is... until they get into the real world and discover that self esteem is a pleasant bi-product of actually accomplishing things.

Dealing effectively with the teachers' unions is one thing, a small step, but they're only a symptom of what is really wrong with education and that's, first, the Feds, and then each individual State's rules, regulations and mandates and Superintendent of Schools.

We're going through county-school budget upheaval here and I simply cannot believe the budget/pay obfuscation in play with the way salaries are calculated, from whence (Fed, State, local) the money comes, what is mandated by whom (Fed/State) in terms of rules and mandates for everything -- it's enough to make ya hurl.

The "education" schools are a joke, IMO.  I'm no genius, nor well-educated on exactly what is provided and gained in obtaining a Master's in education, but it seems to me the key to teaching is to know the subject-matter well, with a few weeks of instructional-instruction, so exactly what is there to an educational degree aside from left-wing indoctrination?

So, the teachers are a low-level problem that will be rectified when we can get our hands around the throat of the educational establishment.

Meh.  That phases them not one whit.  Businesses are already long in the business of coddling due to EEOC, Affirmative Action, and di-VER-sity policies.  I used to think the business world would be a wake-up call to the ignoranti, but that was before they were coopted as well.

"Giving back to the community" my .....     ::puke:: ::gaah::

OT, I just realized we don't have a "mooning" smiley and I know someone put one up for inclusion.  Must have missed it.  Will look, or if someone has one at hand, please stick it in the smilies thread, please?

Keep pushing!  Ending the Federal mandates and interference in education is essential, and everybody should be a right to work state not held hostage by unions!

Statistics have pretty consistently shown that Education majors at the undergrad level have the weakest SAT/ACT scores, and post-Bac Education students have the poorest undergrad GPAs. I agree, "Education" need not be a discipline unto itself except at the primary level. Beyond that, you need specialists in their individual disciplines who have undertaken some additional training to become educators.

I can say with certainty that I learned little in school beyond the 6th grade. I was bookish and studied things that interested me on my own, and learned more that way. Once in college I again found academia useful (I was in a science discipline), but most of the BS (and I don't mean Bachelor of Science) I had to take for general ed purposes was basically just a nuisance designed to keep graying ponytail hippies employed. I'm not talking about the legit humanities like history and philosophy, but the postmodern crap like "communications".

IDP: "... until they get into the real world and discover that self esteem is a pleasant bi-product of actually accomplishing things."

And it's at that moment when they start voting D and living off the fruits of others labor.
