Thanks for all the links. I mentioned elsewhere that my pop took part in the D-Day landings (something I didn't know about until only a few years ago). thank God for courageous men who gave their all so that we could be free.

My granddad was not at Normandy, but he was in the Navy and piloted amphibious landing craft all over the Pacific theater. He described the sound of machine gun bullets cracking as they went past his head just missing by feet or maybe inches. He described the bow of the craft dropping open to let the Marines out, and how they would just start immediately falling over from machine gun fire.
He was being marshaled around Saipan when they dropped the A-bombs and ended the war. They were being marshaled for an invasion of the Japanese mainland, casualties estimated at 1 million. Thank God for the bomb. I want to curbstomp people who say it was a war crime to use those bombs. F them.
Definitely a generation of heroes.
ETA - most of these troops at Normandy were probably around 18-24 years old. They were old enough to grab a toehold on Hitler's Fortress Europe and push the Nazi war machine out of existence, but in 2012 the Democrat party considers them "children" for health insurance purposes.

Yeah, that A-bomb crap torks me off too. I wonder how many people currently living would not be living had that not happened? A million people would have wiped a lot of generations off the books. Idiots. Plus, taking things out of the context of the time and applying it to current day is a trick always used by the mentally deficient.

Yes, we did, something the leftists and Code Pinko's always forget, and something most history books in schools today neglect to mention. Massive aerial leaflet drop IIRC.
It is not surprising that the military government chose to ignore or disbelive the warnings, but actions backed up the warnings and as a result IIRC the Emperor was the one to say enough is enough. Too late for that little man to take on the military, if only he had done so much earlier, uncounted hundreds of thousands on both sides could have been spared.

I scanned the web, cannot find any specific events going on here in Minnie, even searched the "official" tourism guide for the state paid for with taxpayer dollars (Explore Minnesota) and came up with three pages of bupkiss!

My dad went ashore at Cherbourg on June 25th. He was 20 at the time. My understanding is that they had a much better time of it than at Normandy but they still lost most of his platoon that day.
God bless them and their service.

I'm reading Rick Atkinsons 3d book in the liberation trilogy (as good as the other 2) and the money quote, I think, comes from a liberated Parisian: "Liberty is knowing the knock at the door at 6 in the morning is the milkman."
How profound a simple statement can be. Chokes me up.

I'll get to read that three volume set sometime this summer, the neighbor at the lake has it, is going on an Alaska cruise later this month, will give it to my father to read, once they are both done I am going to get my hands on it. Supposed to be quite a series.

I've been waiting almost ten years for the whole set. Worth the wait. My wife, who apparently really does love me and listens to me, had "stalked " the author to get the 3d book even before it hit the shelves! The 2d she got for our paper Annniversary, whichever one that is!
I think you'll find it every bit as entertaining and informative as I did. The level of detail he puts forth indicates how well researched the books are. Everything from official communiques to unit histories and even an impressive amount of first hand accounts that could only be found in letters home make it the most wel rounded historical account I've ever read, I think.
And I can't fail to mention the effect the sacrifices those men made will, at least, leave you with a sense of true awe, if not move you to near tears...or all the way ::) Ahem.
Hope I didn't build it up too much, but I'm pretty sure you'll enjoy the summer with these in your lap.

Yet according to that (rhymes with runt) at U Wisconsin, these men weren't heroes at all. They were just a bunch of rapists who the French feared more than the Germans. And since so few are left to call BS on her argument, it will become factual as far as the education establishment is concerned. Perception is reality.
I'm done with them. We cannot physically live in the same country. I would be fine with saying we take this part, you take that part and we'll see whose ideas are better. But liberals don't work that way. They are totalitarian in every respect: it's their way or the mass grave for you. Thus there will be no peaceful separation, and that is unfortunate. So be it.
