Title: Why WiFi is often so slow ...

Too many users at once (http://online.wsj.com/article/SB10000872396390444233104577595881760532986.html?mod=WSJ_article_outbrain&obref=obinsite)

Comcast and Verizon have their broadband max speeds; Google testing a hi-speed network in Kansas City.

You'll get more speed from wiring right into the router, rather than using WiFi.

I have always considered WiFi more of a convenience network, for light use such as web browsing. All my "serious" stuff is done over hard wire connections. One thing you can do to get the most out of a wireless network is to setup one in the 5 GHz band. It's much less crowded spectrum than 2.4 GHz and isn't competing with things like cordless phones. On a 5 GHz 802.11n connection I can get 300mbps consistently.
