Something very cool and unexpected (video) (http://www.sciencedump.com/content/what-happens-when-you-pour-1200f-molten-aluminum-anthill)
-
Cool...but I'm squealin' this to PETA!
-
Don't be a narc Pablo, you know what this is? It's ART! ;D
-
It sort of reminds of the glassmaking in Sweet Home Alabama -- rebar stuck in the beach-sand attracted lightning and made unusual shapes .... which were then used to make usual shapes.
-
Yeah that lightning to glass thing cracked me up.
Stick the rebar in the beach and then, bam...instant Waterford crystal.
The reality is somewhat different. In south central CO there is a sand dunes national monument. They have the real thing on display. The glass structures are interesting looking but they are not nor would they ever be anything like that movie was suggesting. For one thing you can't see the glass because the whole thing is covered in sand. And that's because when the sand is flash fused into molten glass it's still surrounded by sand which, of course, sticks to it.
As far as the ants are concerned I would be totally good with pouring liquid metal into every single fire ant mound in existence.
-
The molten aluminum thing has been done for years.

Agreed. You have them in CO too? I would have thought the winters are too cold there.

I haven't run into them here yet but at my Texas place...
-
Ahh, yeah that makes more sense. People in other parts of the country don't know what tenacious, furious little bastards these things are. My Dad had to go to the ER because of them, about 20 years ago. Anaphylactic shock. Now he carries around an EpiPen.
They've been reduced a bit in my neck of the woods. We had some decent cold snaps over the past few winters and I think that pushed them back further south. They're still around but nothing like they were 10 years ago. Those mounds used to be everywhere. I probably had 100 just in my back yard.
-
I sympathize with everyone who has to contend with the fire ants. They can redefine nasty.

How about pouring molten aluminum into say the Senate chambers or the white house. Just thinking here.

Molten anything would do just fine.

A big fissure opening up along Pennsylvania Avenue and releasing several million metric tons of molten mother earth would do the trick...

So, Lord High Obama, you want to be King?
-
We are witnessing possibly the worst and weakest king in the history of the world.

Of course all kings before were concerned about the further existence of all they ruled, this clown wants it all to burn.

The answer is rather obvious...ain't it?
