I wrote this on a whim back in 1998, and it was published at JacksJoint.com. Jack Eckert, a friend who ran that site, has crossed the bar...  :'(

T’was the night before Christmas,
And all around the boat
The Coasties were struggling
To keep her afloat.

The waves were a-pounding
The seas wouldn’t wait!
But this crew was ready;
‘Cause THEIR boat had a date!

Santa was waiting
Since his sleigh, don’t you know
For the first time was bogged down
In drifts of deep snow.

The sea suddenly calmed
To the crew’s great relief.
No one knew why,
Not even the old Chief.

Calm seas prevailed
Though the snow was still falling.
The wind had died down;
Then they heard Santa calling!

The boat pulled alongside
A monstrous ice floe,
And on board hopped Santa,
His sleigh and reindeer in tow!

The storm hit again –
The wind it did howl!
The Cutter slashed onward,
Slicing the seas with her bow!

After a while
The sky cleared and then,
The ocean was quiet;
It had happened again!

The crew yelled, “Santa, you’re in luck!
There’s the North Star, Polaris!”
Santa fired up Rudolph’s nose and said,
“Thanks to the Coast Guard, nothing can scare us!”

The sleigh flew into the night sky
With stardust a-twinkling,
And everyone on the crew,
Well, each had an inkling.

That they had saved the tradition
Of Santa and Christmas for children.
The timing, and conditions –
Well, they WERE bewilderin’!

As the cutter pulled into port
Ready for docking,
The crew found hanging on the rail
For each member, a stocking.

The surprise, don’t you know
Was from Santa, of course.
It was his way of saying,
“Thanks for steering the course.

“That storm was just terrible;
Of our direction, I lost track.
Nonetheless, you went out –
Tho’ you knew you might not get back.

“Merry Christmas, you Coasties!
And to all of you, smooth sailing!
Keep up the good work!
You just don’t think of failing!

“The public won’t know
Of your mission that night.
But that’s your standard procedure;
Just keep doing things right!

“You saved Christmas this year,
Not to mention my life –
I guess it’s needless to say,
‘Thanks,’ from my wife.

“See you next Christmas, Coasties!
Maybe Mother Nature will be
Friendly - kind - gentle
And you’ll not be at sea.”

Merry Christmas all!

I'm a happy camper today as i completed all the outside decorating before the bad weather hit. Today it was cloudy, a little wind, and temperatures in the 70's. Tomorrow night the temps drop drastically (30s).

I say "Merry Christmas" in answer to Happy Holidays and "Merry Christmas to you" if nothing else is forthcoming.

I do as well and I've noted that very few act insulted.  Those that do ... well ...

I've noted as well that most of those who seem to take umberage over "Merry Christmas" tend to do so only on message boards and blogs from the safety and anonymity of their keyboards.   ::vafancoul::

Title: The Parable of the Shopper
Post by: oldcoastie6468 on December 15, 2013, 09:24:45 AM
Received in an email. Author unknown.

Quote
THE PARABLE OF THE SHOPPER:

The Parable of the Shopper
Author unknown

My feet were tired, my hands cold, my arms exhausted from the weight of the packages, and it was beginning to snow. The bus was late. I kept rearranging my packages, trying to hold them in a different way in order to give my poor arms a rest. I still remember that day as if it were yesterday, and yet fifteen years have gone by. Nevertheless, when Christmas rolls around, I remember that day on the bus.

I was tired. I had been Christmas shopping all day long. When the bus finally arrived, it was packed with holiday shoppers in the same exhausted mood as I. I sank into the only vacant place, near the back, by a handsome gentleman. He politely helped me to situate my packages and even held some of them himself.

“My goodness," he said, "did you leave any merchandise still in the stores for the rest of us?"

"I don’t think so," I moaned. "Worst of all, I still haven’t made all of my purchases."

The woman in the seat behind us joined in my grief and added, "No, the worst thing is that the day after Christmas we will be carrying this same armload back to the store to exchange it."

Her comment brought a general chuckle from all those within earshot, including my seat mate. As the laughter subsided, he began in a quiet, melodious voice, deepened with experience, to teach me a lesson that I have never forgotten:

"Hear now the parable of the shopper," the man said, speaking gently and indicating my packages. "A woman went forth to shop, and as she shopped, she carefully planned. Each child’s desires were considered. The hard-earned money was divided, and the many purchases were made with the pure joy and delight that is known only to the giver. Then the gifts were wrapped and placed lovingly under the tree. In eager anticipation she scanned each face as the gifts were opened."

"'What a lovely sweater,' said the eldest daughter, 'but I think I would prefer blue. I suppose I can exchange it?'

"'Thank you for the cassette player, Mother. It’s just what I wanted,' said her son. And then aside, secretly to his sister, he continued, 'I told her I wanted the one with the automatic reverse and an extra speaker. I never get what I want!'

"The youngest child spoke out with the spoiled honesty of her age, 'I hate rag dolls! I wanted a china doll. I won't play with it!' And the doll, still in the box, was kicked under the couch."

"One gift still lay under the tree. The woman pointed it out to her husband. 'Your gift is still there.'

"*///{{{***! I'll open it when I have the time,' he stated. 'I want to get this bike put together first.'

"How sad it is," continued the man in his soft, beautiful voice. "When gifts are not received in the same spirit they are given. To reject a thoughtful gift is to reject the loving sentiment of the giver himself. And yet, are we not all sometimes guilty of rejecting?"

He was talking not only to me, but to all of those on the bus. They had all gathered around. The bus was parked.

He took a present from my stack.

"This one," he said, holding it up and pretending to open the card, "could be to you." He pointed to a rough-looking, teenage boy in a worn denim jacket and pretended to read the gift card. "To you I give My life, lived perfectly, as an example so that you might see the pattern and live worthy to return and live with Me again. Merry Christmas from the Messiah."

"This one," he said, holding up a pure, white present, "is for you." He held out the gift to a worn-looking woman, who in earlier years must have been a real beauty. She read the card out loud and allowed her tears to slip without shame down her painted face. "My gift to you is repentance. This Christmas I wish you to know for certain that though your sins be as scarlet, they shall be white as snow. Signed, your Advocate with the Father."

"That isn’t all. No, here is a big, red package." he looked around the group and brought a ragged, unkempt, little child forward. "This package would be for you if He were here. The card would say, 'On this Christmas and always, My gift to you is love. From your brother, Jesus.'"

"One final gift," said my seat mate. "The greatest of all the gifts of God--Eternal life!"

He held our minds and our hearts. We were a hungry audience. Though our shopping had left us drained, now we were being filled by his words.

"How we receive these gifts, these precious gifts from the Babe of Bethlehem, is the telling point. Are we exchangers?" he asked. "Is there really anything else we would rather have? It is what we do with a gift long after we have opened it that shows our true appreciation. "

With those words he was gone. That was fifteen years ago, only a wink in time. But not even an eternity could erase the sermon, or the man.

Family Moment

We hear so often the phrase "Jesus died for me" that sometimes we forget the purpose of salvation isn't just to be glad our souls are safe for eternity; it's to follow Jesus’s example--give ourselves to others. That's what the Scripture talks about in 2 Kings, and that’s what Christ did for us.

The truth is, we were saved from something for something.

As a family, you can create a giving experience by going to a homeless shelter or making sandwiches to pass out, and this is a good thing to do. But what if this year you prayed for God to send a giving experience? God is more than able to answer and would delight at your willingness to be a blessing in the life of another soul--or many souls--whom he loves.

An Advent Prayer

Our Father in heaven, thank you for being the gift that holds families together, even over time and distance. Is there someone I know who needs the present and the presence of Jesus in their home this Christmas? Is there a stranger? Please show me who. I want more than ever to give your love to those who need it. You gave yourself for me when I needed it. Help me to do the same. In the name of Jesus, amen.

Title: A Different Christmas Poem
Post by: oldcoastie6468 on December 19, 2013, 09:23:15 AM
"A Different Christmas Poem"

The embers glowed softly, and in their dim light,
I gazed round the room and I cherished the sight.
My wife was asleep, her head on my chest,
My daughter beside me, angelic in rest.

Outside the snow fell, a blanket of white,
Transforming the yard to a winter delight.
The sparkling lights in the tree I believe,
Completed the magic that was Christmas Eve.

My eyelids were heavy, my breathing was deep,
Secure and surrounded by love I would sleep.
In perfect contentment, or so it would seem,
So I slumbered, perhaps I started to dream.

The sound wasn't loud, and it wasn't too near,
But I opened my eyes when it tickled my ear.
Perhaps just a cough, I didn't quite know,
Then the sure sound of footsteps outside in the snow.

My soul gave a tremble, I struggled to hear,
And I crept to the door just to see who was near.
Standing out in the cold and the dark of the night,
A lone figure stood, his face weary and tight.

A soldier, I puzzled, some twenty years old,
Perhaps a Marine, huddled here in the cold.
Alone in the dark, he looked up and smiled,
Standing watch over me, and my wife and my child.

"What are you doing?" I asked without fear,
"Come in this moment, it's freezing out here!
Put down your pack, brush the snow from your sleeve,
You should be at home on a cold Christmas Eve!"

For barely a moment I saw his eyes shift,
Away from the cold and the snow blown in drifts...
To the window that danced with a warm fire's light
Then he sighed and he said "It’s really all right.

I'm out here by choice. I'm here every night.
It's my duty to stand at the front of the line,
That separates you from the darkest of times.
No one had to ask or beg or implore me,
I'm proud to stand here like my fathers before me.

My Gramps died at 'Pearl' on a day in December,
Then he sighed, "That's a Christmas 'Gram always remembers.
My dad stood his watch in the jungles of 'Nam',
And now it is my turn and so, here I am.

I've not seen my own son in more than a while,
But my wife sends me pictures, he's sure got her smile."
Then he bent and he carefully pulled from his bag,
The red, white, and blue... an American flag.

"I can live through the cold and the being alone,
Away from my family, my house and my home.
I can stand at my post through the rain and the sleet,
I can sleep in a foxhole with little to eat.

I can carry the weight of killing another,
Or lay down my life with my sister and brother.
Who stand at the front against any and all,
To ensure for all time that this flag will not fall."

"So go back inside," he said, "harbor no fright,
Your family is waiting and I'll be all right. "
"But isn't there something I can do, at the least,
Give you money, I asked, or prepare you a feast?
It seems all too little for all that you've done,
For being away from your wife and your son."

Then his eye welled a tear that held no regret,
"Just tell us you love us, and never forget.
To fight for our rights back at home while we're gone,
To stand your own watch, no matter how long.

For when we come home, either standing or dead,
To know you remember we fought and we bled
Is payment enough, and with that we will trust,
That we mattered to you as you mattered to us."

PLEASE, would you do me the kind favor of sending this to as many people as you can? Christmas will be coming soon and some credit is due to our U. S. service men and women for our being able to celebrate these festivities. Let's try in this small way to pay a tiny bit of what we owe. Make people stop and think of our heroes, living and dead, who sacrificed themselves for us.

The Night Before Sunday
By Rick Woodall

'Twas the night before Sunday, when all through the home,
Not a creature was planning, Sis was on the phone;

The Bible’s were packed under the bed so fair,
In hopes that they would forget they were there;

The children were playing on their video game,
While visions of high scores would give them more fame;

And Mom into her TV, and Dad we call Pap,
Had just settled down for a long winter's nap,

There was no use to set the alarm,
For, sleeping in, had such a charm.

When to the sky, they saw the flash, and
The trumpet sounded with oh, such a blast.

There He was, standing in the clouds,
And you could hear wing flapping sounds.

When, what to their wondering eyes should appear?
Two large books that brought them fear.

Time was done, it happened so quick.
Then he pointed his finger and to Dad he did pick.

Get to the left, He shouted so loud,
“Get over there and don’t even frown.”

You had your choice and you had a chance.
You chose the world, with party and dance.

To the top of the clouds! To the top of the sky!
They watch him ascend, With a gleam in his eye !"

Things of the earth will be no more.
The ones on the right have opened the door.

There will be no more obstacles, tears or pain.
All that suffering lead to their gain.

And then, in a moment, I heard from the liar,
“Welcome to Hell and burning fire.”

As I drew in my head, and woke right up,
I knew that my dream got me out of a slump.

Come on Mom get me a shirt and a tie,
Get the Kids up, this dream doesn’t lie.

Dust off the Bible’s under the bed.
We won’t sleep in, it’s church services instead.

His eyes -- how they twinkled! His disposition so merry!
Please hurry he said, please do not terry!

For if we get ready, don’t let the time pass,
We can even make it to Bible class.

So with his Bible under his arm, they hopped in the car,
And with smoke from the exhaust and a squeal of the tires,

You could hear him exclaim as he drove out of sight,
I’ll be planning for Sunday on Saturday night.

How to Have a New Mexico Christmas

Feliz Navidad! In New Mexico, Christmas truly is the most wonderful time of the year.

We take comfort in knowing that no matter where we traverse in our great state, on Christmas Eve, the glow of luminarias (aka farolitos) will always be there to light our way home.

{snip}

Traditionally, luminarias lit the way to midnight mass. Now, all across our state, cities host luminaria tours around town plazas and well-dressed neighborhoods.

By foot, bike, car or bus, from Taos to Las Cruces, we enjoy this statewide tradition.

Make your tour extra special this year and join your fellow New Mexicans in holiday song under the twinkling lights of your city plaza gazebo.

For Christmas, who's staying home and who's traveling? We're going to our son's & DIL's place, about 12 miles from here. Baking a ham on Christmas Day (that I won at my American Legion post) to take with us. Our daughter will blast through the cheddar curtain to come down to our place first, and then up to our son's.

I hope that Christmas finds everyone here and our friends and families in good health and free from the terrible weather our country's been experiencing.

Deck The Halls

It’s that time of year again when our heads are full of sugar plums – or at least the modern equivalent. To put it another way: We’ve got Christmas on the brain and can think of nothing except all the stuff needed for making it a great holiday for one and all.

It’s a bit of a spoiler, though, getting all of these damn letters looking for donations. The Red Cross, UNICEF, Doctors without Borders, ad infinitum. I made the mistake of reading one of them about the homeless young man in Hamburg who was probably going to freeze to death for lack of a warm jacket and any hot nourishment. Or the elderly lady whose pension is so small that once the rent and utilities are paid, there’s no money left for food. Then there are the Syrian refugees, desperate to be somewhere safe and also in need of food and clothing.

How dare they ruin my fantasy of the wonderful world out there, full of colored lights, Christmas trees and good times for all!

In fact, the damage is done. All those letters have made the rot spread in my brain. So whatever you do, don’t ask me what I want for Christmas. I’ve got more than I need of everything. Please make a donation to the organization of your choice instead, even if it is small and you feel like it couldn’t possibly make a difference. All those small contributions add up and will help. We must believe that! Of course, if that’s all too impersonal for you, maybe there’s someone in the neighborhood who could use a helping hand.

MERRY CHRISTMAS *****HAPPY CHANUKAH******

They're forecasting some snow for tonight and tomorrow morning - maybe 3" or so.

We hope our daughter comes down here tomorrow morning like we all planned. But she's afraid to drive in the snow ever since she got sideswiped by a hit and run 18-wheeler that put her in the ditch at 70 MPH.  ::rockets::

PRIORITY MESSAGE

FAIRBANKS, ALASKA – SPECIAL REPORT (CGPI) {Coast Guard Public Information}

Reported by Jeff Lindstrom

An identified flying object will be tracked on radar screens throughout the world tonight. The object has been undergoing test runs for a week, and it will lift off from the North Pole at 1135Z, 24 DEC 2013, in plenty of time to make it to the first locations at which the hour reaches 0000:00:01 in 2014.

This reporter has confirmed reports indicate that Santa has requested and received authorization from Coast Guard Headquarters to use various CG personnel to assist him in completing the tremendous responsibilities of his assigned duties. He had heard that they felt that they had to go out, no matter the weather. Mr. Claus stated, "That’s all I had to know!" Santa has ensured their safe return. Mrs. Claus said, "I’m so confident that everyone will return safely!"

The agreement states that Santa and the CG Yeoman will use the notebook computer given to him by the CG to track his many deliveries throughout the long night. The CG Quartermaster will guide the sleigh through the dark night and over unfamiliar terrain, and a CG Boatswains Mate will maintain the many lines and harnesses required to keep the sleigh on its appointed rounds. The CG Storekeeper has ensured that all items are aboard the sleigh. The retired CG Boiler Tender will keep the reindeer properly stoked, and a CG Electricians Mate will keep a constant safety watch to maintain the integrity of Rudolph’s nose beacon. The CG Engineman will ensure that the exhaust from the reindeer does not adversely affect the mission.

The CG Aviation Machinists Mate has the responsibility of ensuring that the sleigh is properly chocked at each stop, and the CG Seaman will be responsible for handling the lines during each docking of Santa’s vessel. The CG Radarman will monitor the safe progress of the trip, and the CG Radioman will maintain contact with ground stations as required. The CG Avionics Technician will, of course, take care of any in-flight electronic glitches that may occur.

The CG Damage Control expert will fix the sleigh when it occasionally scrapes a chimney or TV antenna, which occurs during each trip Santa makes. The CG Rescue Swimmer will retrieve any articles that happen to fall into raging winter seas or storm-wracked mountains.

The Coast Guard has assigned Captain Magic Elfer to oversee all activities.

This is the first year the CG has been so extensively involved in Santa’s yearly trip; because of that fact, governments throughout the world share the conviction that the mission will be more successful this year than any year in the past.

Santa has guaranteed that all of the CG participants will have no memory of their assistance during his trip when they awaken on Christmas Day.

This reporter is signing off – Merry Christmas to everyone! But - - - - be sure to watch for Santa’s sleigh "Coasting" through the skies on Christmas Eve!

I wrote this, and I got permission from me to revise it a little bit.

13 reasons why Santa Claus is a Conservative.

1. Did you ever hear Santa wishing someone a “Happy Holidays?” No, for the man in red, it’s always “Merry Christmas” – no matter who it offends.

2. He lives in the North Pole – a tax haven with a zero percent tax rate – hardly a sign of someone who believes in government and wants to pay his “fair share.”

3. Santa’s whole mission is one of private charity. There are no records of the Santa Claus movement being given even $1 in public assistance. Santa epitomizes charity over welfare.

4. He is the sole employer in the area of huge amounts of unskilled elves. Does anyone really believe they are getting minimum wage? They certainly aren’t getting $15 an hour as the unions demand.

5. Speaking of unions, if one calculates the amount of work required at Christmas, there must be some solid all-nighters being pulled by the Santa team. There’s certainly no room for union-allocated breaks and hour limits. Santa’s factory would not meet the approval of the left.

6.Santa is almost single handedly responsible for the surge of consumerism that pounds our culture every year – a trend that benefits big corporations enormously, and something that our liberal friends despise.

7. On the subject of regulation, does the sleigh meet EPA regulations? Its unspecified power source is hardly an approved fuel – yet Santa seems not to care whether it damages the environment or not. Is Santa a global warming ‘denier?’ It sure sounds like it!

8. Santa also operates what would be an enormous factory right near the ice caps. Definitely no climate change concerns here then.

9. Also, flying reindeers must surely be a protected species. Is it ethical to be using them for intense labor lugging around tons of presents across the globe? PETA would surely have a fit, but Santa appears not to have any ethical concerns for Rudolph and his friends.

10. As for the children to whom he delivers gifts, these are no handouts. Kids must earn their gifts via good behavior, promoting a conservative work ethic, and Santa has no problem with snatching gifts away from naughty kids. Punishment is not a naughty word for Claus.

11. The naughty or nice list also shows an objective moral compass. Santa apparently rejects liberal relativism or explaining away bad behavior with pop psychology and ‘culture’ issues.

12. His love of cookies and large stomach shows a blatant disregard for Michelle Obama’s healthy eating program, as it encourages children to believe that eating vast quantities of cookies is perfectly acceptable. If he were a liberal, he’d be asking for broccoli and cranberry juice.

13. Finally, he works with Coca-Cola – one of the biggest corporations on the planet - something that no self-respecting liberal would even dream of doing.
