As I understand it all military personnel are well informed
that they are an apolitical entity.  He was a sergeant.

Being in the military does not disqualify someone from holding political opinions or even speaking them and one can also belong to a political party, but the military has always drawn a hard line on anything challenging the chain of command.  The Sergent knew this, and he made a choice.  Right/wrong/indifferent it was his to make, and he'll have to live with it.
