Former UNC President Bill Friday says Andy Griffith died this morning in Dare County. Friday, who is a close friend of the actor, confirmed that to WITN News.
Friday tells us the 86-year-old actor died at his Dare County home around 7:00 a.m. this morning.
Griffith attended UNC Chapel Hill where he earned a degree in Music. According to IMDb.com, Griffith was a regular on the Ed Sullivan show in the 1950's.
His legacy role, which earned him the title of "America's Favorite Sheriff"on "The Andy Griffith" show, set in fictional Mayberry, put North Carolina on the map in the entertainment industry. The show ran from 1960-1968, propelling a handful of spin-off programs. Griffith also produced and starred in the television series "Matlock."
Griffith received the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2005 from President George W. Bush.
Griffith was born in Mount Airy. http://www.witn.com/home/headlines/SHERIFF__EMS_Called_To_Andy_Griffiths_Home_161201175.html

Bush gave Obama John Roberts.

Sorry ... I can't say I'll miss him . From everything I've read Griffith ( unlike the fictional Andy ) wasn't the nicest guy to come down the pike .

Heard the same, although he's a local hero in NC. Meh. He did a promo for one of his gospel albums several years after "Matlock" and referred to it, in tones dripping with disdain, as "that law-yer show".

Put NC on the map? I thought the Wright Brothers did that, followed by the Tarheels?

Put NC on the map? I thought the Wright Brothers did that, followed by the Tarheels? I like to think Roanoke did that, the first British colony in North America. Before Jamestown even. Ironically that is where Griffith lived, on Roanoke Island. Andy Griffith is indeed a NC institution. It disappointed me to learn that Andy Griffith the man was very different from Andy Griffith the fictional sheriff. But it was Don Knotts who truly made that show.

There was more of "Lonesome Roads" than "Andy Taylor" in Griffith .

Griffith was a classless jerk...a complete shill for all things liberal and progressive, too.
I'm glad he wasn't from Texas...I would have had a hard time dealing with that. NC can have him.
And, yes, I agree...Lonesome Rhodes was more Griffith than Andy Taylor.

One more thing...
I have connections within the hotel/hospitality business (have had for many, many years although I don't work in it) so I hear about famous people from time to time.
Griffith was infamous for abusing hotel staff. From the bellmen, to restaurant waitstaff...from housekeepers to hotel managers, no one ever had anything good to say about him. He was frequently described as indifferent at best and (more frequently) hostile at worst to ordinary people.
