There is this article from the Old Gray Hag, which is standard Old Gray Hag fare.
http://www.nytimes.com/2012/06/27/world/middleeast/turkey-seeks-nato-backing-in-syria-dispute.html?_r=1&hpAnd so far NATO appears to be taking marching orders and doing Turkey's begging. From that standpoint there may be the False Flag operation the fevered Libertarians fear/long-for by PaulBots commenting at ZH (see below).
http://www.zerohedge.com/news/guest-post-absurdity-natoWhile I am not of the fevered PaulBotian mindset I have been saying since The Wall fell and the old Soviet Empire crumbled that the structure of NATO should have been modified to a looser information sharing role and not a hard military organization and mutual defense pact. And certainly once the former Soviet satellites broke away and regained their independence any continued NATO umbrela as constituted would have a thorn-in-the-ass when dealing with subsequent Russian regimes (not that I care particularly, but the fragile Russian ego and fear that they do not belong culturally or historically with European nations [they don't by the way] should have been an obvious consideration in structuring any forward-thinking relationship with our European allies and emerging former East Bloc nations) with respect toward defense and diplomatic missions. Anyway, much of that debate was ignored or skipped over, but as of now the mission of NATO is over. The Europeans are fully capable of defending themselves, we have no compelling interest in being there in force. We can lease the bases we are currently using for logistical support and bring the forward deployed elements home. I see no compelling argument to the contrary.
ZH then posted this article later in the day, continuing the "OMG, another Gulf of Tonkin/Illegal War/False Flag" eme and triggering a new round of hyerbolic hysterical comments. I swear the PaulBots both fear the ignition of WWIII and applaud its start. These people scare the crap outta me sometimes.
http://www.zerohedge.com/news/turkey-mobilizing-media-manipulation-provocation-or-realityAnyway, it appears Erdogan is getting the NATO boys to pay lip service to his desires but it is yet to be seen if when push comes to shove NATO continues to be led by the nose. As far as all the conspiracy crap goes, I could see Obama itching for another conflict just to distract everyone back here from a sh*tty economy, F&F and Leakgate. But he needs more dance partners to get that card filled.
We have ZERO interest in Syria as long as Israel is not threatened, and by threatened I mean they can't handle any cross border spillage themselves (and I have no doubt they can as long as it stays contained). If this thing broadens then all bets are off.
And it all could have been avoided had NATO gone the way of the Dodo.
