New ChiCom Linux-based OS to be released this October

The name Kylin (or Qilin) is a mythical Chinese beast...

No surprise they are going Linux-based...if they think that can help them not to be snooped on...   ::thinking::

Maybe time for us to go the same route?!

But, then there is the rumor that the US was behind the disappearance of MH370 in order to snag a couple Chinese techies on the flight connected with developing the new ChiCom OS in order to learn how to penetrate it.

Yeah, seems loony to me too, but I could see craven statists going to such an extreme to maintain power and control, but there are just a few problems with that:

1) First and most obvious, if it is a Linux-based system I would think Linux presents the answers to the questions the NSA would be asking, so no need to look any deeper.

2) Second and I would think equally obvious - diverting a commercial plane to Diego Garcia is feasible but keeping it a secret is beyond laughable.  We are expected to believe the NSA spying program was easy to expose but the hijacking of a commercial airliner and the detention of its crew and passengers is a secret easily locked down by hundreds of military personnel.  Uh huh.

3) Third, at some point the passengers and crew have to be dealt with, either released (after what, memory wiping them?), eliminated or put back on the plane and dumped into the ocean thousands of miles away from Diego Garcia somewhere near past search areas.

Yeah, I don't see any of those happening.

So, the ChiComs have a new OS, good for them.  Hope y'all feel safe and secure now!

With an open source OS, no less. ::laughonfloor::

With commies everything is given a very cynical, opposite name.  The Berlin Wall was in official DDR parlance the "anti-fascist protection wall", though of course in reality it was a containment wall to keep East Berliners from fleeing to the West.  Similarly the idea of the ChiComs developing an OS to protect against snooping is the surest proof that it is itself an elaborate snooping tool.

And yeah, the idea that the US government would need to resort to kidnapping technicians from a civilian flight is pretty laughable.  We still have the best minds in computer science right here. Any specific design details they might want are likely obtainable through conventional intelligence avenues.

There's really no such thing as a truly secure computing platform.  The steps you would have to take to make it truly secure would also make it increasingly useless as a computing platform.  Input/Output is the fundamental purpose of a computer, which is also the point where any system is vulnerable. I have little doubt that national-level intelligence units can penetrate this new OS.

Which is why when things go south going back to low-tech tradecraft will surge back into popularity...
