I don't understand how Minnesota seems to escape many of the consequences of liberal policy. Every other bastion of Leftism seems to crumble under its weight, but for some reason, MN's economy, standard of living, etc, seem to do well in comparison.
"A strict observance of the written laws is doubtless one of the high duties of a good citizen, but it is not the highest. The laws of necessity, of self-preservation, of saving our country when in danger, are of higher obligation. To lose our country by a scrupulous adherence to written law, would be to lose the law itself, with life, liberty, property and all those who are enjoying them with us; thus absurdly sacrificing the end to the means."

Because Minnesota, for all it's faults, didn't go Full Retard until 3 years ago.  Give it time.  Companies are downsizing and moving out.  Ford...3M...gone.  Who's replaced them?

I agree MNHawk, the progs may have controlled Minneapolis forever (and Duluth, they've all but completely ruined that town), St Paul not as much...and until recently Governors and the legislature have been more fiscally responsible than in more loony bastions, all a matter of degree to be sure, there is plenty of stupid to pass around...light rail, stadiums, endless waste into social welfare schemes and Big Ed...we are in the early stages of death-by-locust.

I think it's because you have a lot of the same traits as Scandinavia, and probably not coincidence that many of the people are Scandinavian as well.  Socialism can work if you have a fairly homogeneous society with a sense that the nation is an extended family, and where there is broad consent for that sort of economic arrangement.

In any place that attempts a socialized or collectivized economy, there's probably a certain minimum % of the population that must be actively altruistic for the system to not flame out in the usual ways.  Enough do-gooders and people with enough disposable income to feel good about themselves for paying more in than they take out, basically.

As MNHawk pointed out though, cracks are appearing, and if Progs hang onto the governorship and pick up the other chamber, the pace at which we decline will increase.  In the past there were Dem's that had a modicum of fiscal responsibility, the Prog takeover is so thorough that those types are all but completely extinct, and the Pubbies continue to be taken over by the ruling class types who loath the social conservatives and who cannot possibly say with a straight face they are even fiscal conservatives any more, so the handwritting is indeed all over the wall in large neon letters.

It wasn't that long ago St. Paul was still working class, and Norm Coleman was mayor.  Now all the factories are gone and it's nothing but another welfare magnet, craphole inner city.

This is good for you don't want any city/town left not being a sh*thole.
