...
CATL is the world's largest maker of lithium-ion batteries, with over 30% of the global market. They have supply contracts with Ford Motor to produce EV batteries for Ford's new line of electric Mustang SUV's and Lightning pickups.
CATL, a Chinese manufacturer, hoped to build a factory in the US, but gave up. The United States is increasingly viewed as hostile to foreign manufacturing investment, as recent headlines in mining, minerals processing, automaking, chemicals, and semiconductor manufacturing confirm. CATL instead will invest billions of dollars for new facilities in Bolivia, Germany, and Hungary, among other places. For the US, CATL will shift to a tech licensing scheme, through which Ford and others will pay CATL for each battery they produce using CATL's proprietary technology. Negotiations are also underway with Tesla, who already uses CATL batteries in their vehicles for other markets.
