I recall food grade buckets, didn't you say you get them for free from local outfits?

The barrels via water treatment plants I did not know about.

Yup I did and between that and using hand warmers to get the oxygen out of the buckets I just thought it was an economical way to store food. The best line I heard in the vid was to not spend money on buckets but rather use the money to put food in them.

The barrels also can be had from places like juice plants.

Sorry JF - I tried to watch the second one but the camera work made me seasick. What was he trying to convey?

I get my buckets from the Deli/Bakery depts. in my local food stores.  There's been "food" stored in them; they're food-grade.

Demand for these buckets must be on the rise, because our grocery bakery/deli dept just started proactively selling them for $1.00 apiece. I'm relatively certain that the sign I saw there yesterday advertising their availability was never there before.

The laws of necessity, of self-preservation, of saving our country when in danger, are of higher obligation. To lose our country by a scrupulous adherence to written law, would be to lose the law itself, with life, liberty, property and all those who are enjoying them with us; thus absurdly sacrificing the end to the means."

I believe it that the advent of that Prepper series on TV has opened a lot of eyes out there. I've been buying juice in clear plastic bottles so I can use them to store dry goods in in smaller quantities. People are getting the message and it's going to get bigger and bigger.

I need to check into a nitrogen tank to get a feel for the price.

Will the nitrogen kill bugs that are in rice?

One gallon bottles of juice are available, I use them for water.
Prices on many items have doubled and its just started, time
for me to get off my arse.

Even if one discounts the whole WSHTF scenario having three
or more months of stores is still a good idea. If cash flow problems
event then eliminating that grocery store bill and eating out of
the pantry will help keep the balance book stable.

ETA: There are five gallon plastic water jugs with screw on metal
lids that may be purchased for about $10.00.

From what I saw on the preppers show,Nitrogen is heavier than air and it pushes the air out of the top as it occupies the space. Nothing breathes Nitrogen so it's a safe bet that it kills bugs.As a matter of fact I believe i read someplace that they pump it into potato chip bags to preserve the flavor.  The test they used to make sure that there was enough nitrogen was to put a lit match in the space above the food and if there enough the match went out.

Started looking and Craig's list has, by appearance, a four foot bottle for $100.
It's no problem to have a bottle refilled at a welding supply or medical gas supply.
The local web sites didn't have prices but a little phone work will answer the questions.

This nitrogen could solve a lot of storage problems.
Oxygen oxidizes, no oxygen no oxidation.

Freezing will kill whatever bugs in almost anything; flour, rice, corn meal ...

Bring it home, toss it in the freezer for 4-5 days, then pull it out and slap it on the counter for another 2-3 days til it defrosts and dries out.  After that, you can bag it, bucket it, vacuum pack it or whatever you choose.

Do I leave it in the bag to dry out?  I hope so, I am currently living in a
swamp and any thing left on the table mildews or rots over night.

Yes, leave it in the bag.  If it's humid in your house, shake up and flip the bag once a day.  It may take a day or so longer til it's dry.  At that point, we usually portion it into gallon sized bags and then store them in a bucket.

Is your abode not "climate-controlled", CO?

These new systems don't dehumidify as well as the pre-energy star systems did.
It just seeps through the pores, the walls, everywhere.  It's 90% humidity right
now and the forecast is partly cloudy.  The lowest humidity in the last three days
was 70% and the air temp was 80.  It's a swamp out there I tell you, a swamp.
