My Dad still has one that looks like this, although he never carried it 'round on his shoulder:

I still have one similar to the next shown, in black, a Sony, and it still works fine.
The last pic elicited a chuckle from me.

Used to call 'em "Ghetto Blasters" when I was a kid. I had a few that were every bit as large-and-in-charge as the ones pictured.
My best one was black and sleek, and stylized futuristically with all kinds of angles and curves, giving a sort of Darth-Vaderish impression.

As a kid I had a Panasonic that had a slide-out turntable made into it. It wasn't really a boombox per se, but more of an early attempt at the compact all-in-one home stereo. This was in the mid-80s. I still have it somewhere.

& picked a few of these up @ Best Buy last year (not much in "design" - but plays ANY CD/CD-R & you can jack in your iPhone or iPad in the back to amplify sound)
