Yep - as you know, seen it may times..  Do okay until the chief two-blocks the stars and stripes.  Damn onions !!

Could you make out the Chief's rate - not his rating, but his rate?

It should make you happy because my first thought was he had been a Yeoman.  Doubt he was Boats or Guns, looked to be something crossed, but also not keys. Another thing - only 3 hash marks, so never did full retirement, but they were gold so he had continuous good conduct, Hollywood wouldn't know the difference.

PS-I think it could be an Aviation Boatswainsmate symbol, but I can never get close/clear look at it.
