How can this clown possibly do this? How does he think he'll recoup his investment? How many mega-ships are out there begging to cross oceans?

Even if this guy could pull it off, its in Nicaragua! All it takes is one collectivist "government" (which they have had plenty of) and your 100 year "lease" is toilet paper.

Who are the BRICS again? Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa. So to trade with Brazil, China would do what? Sail the Cape of Good Hope - traversing pirate infested waters off the coasts of Africa ? If this becomes a major Chinese shipping interest - A Collectivist govt would be foolish to mess with it because 1) money and 2) Chinese military might. You can be sure they will get their cut.
Its the new world order folks - and having a more direct route not under direct American control will be beneficial to the new powers that be..

Indeed this is all about trying to elevate China's prestige and presence and sticking to the Americans is a bonus, I just question the actual feasability of this...sure the Chi-Com's can throw lots of money and manpower at this and however long it takes to do they could do it...
From a cost/benefit standpoint I find it much easier and cheaper to simply co-opt the Panamanian's and take outright control of the existing canal...and even if it came to force, what would the current bed-wetter in Das Kapital do to threaten a principle bond holder? Not much I would bet.
So on those points I say this is all a pipedream...

In the pre-industrial world they built an object that can be seen from space. more recently they built entire cities no one lives in.. and if such mis-allocation of capital is possible ( providing it was mis-allocations and not deliberate to accommodate slaves) then I think its entirely possible given the time and will they can dig a big damn trench. The fact that they are not simply seizing the panama Canal is encouraging in that they seem to be avoiding a direct conflict with the United States -- however they might just being thinking ahead and wondering how to to get huge warships into the Atlantic.
