Pretty reliable power. Only one outage in the year I was there but it was a doozy. The whole country is interconnected, with little excess. If something happens at a power plant, any power plant, a good chunk of the country can go offline.

It's 100% obvious to anybody with a brain. The Chi-Com's attacking South Korea and Japan and the US directly is the worst thing they could do as it would unite the region. They want Taiwan to be a cakewalk, and CNAS is doing their battlefield prep! Once Taiwan falls, sorry...it's over in the West PAcific folks...Taiwan will become the largest air, land and sea fortress the world will ever see...and all the neighboring disputed areas will fall quickly into ChiCom hands...and military/economic extortion will oppress all. They only way to neutralize them once in place is overkill the entire island with SLBM's, and that kicks off a bigger holocaust.

That was a pretty good analysis, though Taiwan does not have the luxury of time for shipbuilding and drone development...they need to get assets in place now, like yesterday. They have to get any operational vessels, drones and missiles available on the market put in service like pronto. I think that US subs could sink lots of Chinese vessels.
I have no idea if US carriers would be sunk by China.

Don't need to be an expert, common sense can take most people as far as they need to go.
The US could do a lot to prevent the Communists from taking it, as always it comes down to the will to do so.
Conventionally, I do not see our leadership willing to adversely risk capital assets to help defend Taiwan, nor do they really need to. By capital assets I mean carriers, amphib command ships, cruisers and B-2's, F-35's or F-22's. And I am not certain from a boots on the ground respect we would have "troops" per se there, though there could be the ubiquitous "advisors".
I would park any carriers well enough off of Taiwan to make it difficult for the commies to sortie surface ships or subs to intercept...forcing them to use longer range missiles (or planes) which provide more flight time and better odds at intercepting. Any carrier sorties could be launched to do aerial activity from that distance using just the F/A-18's supported by re-fueler's. Additional land-based long-range bombers from Guam, Diego Garcia and CONUS (B-1's maybe even some B-52's) could wreak havoc on land and sea targets. Attack sub use I would expect to be utilized, but limited.
China's only real option is to overwhelm with numbers - ships, planes, missiles, subs...manpower they have plenty so that is not a concern for them...and the cost in hardware could be huge...and then it comes down to who opts for The Putin Doctrine first when conventional isn't succeeding...and more importantly when American on Communist or Communist on American casualties start...and somebody pushes a button better left locked?
Or does Biden do another cut & run? Which is not going to be easier at sea...
Flip a coin, don't be surprised if it lands on its edge...

Just a theory.
What Taiwan has in common with Ukraine is that the US might well be happy seeing Taiwan destroyed in order to harm China, just as Ukraine is being destroyed in order to harm Russia. TSMC may end up like Nordstream. I am told that taking out TSMC would greatly harm the international supply chain, even if the new plant in US AZ gets completed. Some high end chips are only made in Taiwan.

The Chinese guy said that weak countries like Tibet always fall under control of some other major power and China wanted it to be China. I also recall someone saying that once in Tibet, it is an easy path into China proper. So China wants the Himalayas guarding their southern border.

He said the idea of a standard national language is a modern feature. He said that people did not travel much and people in one village might not understand people in a village 20 miles away. I would think that Latin in the Roman empire would have been standardized. ???
There is an individual advantage to knowing some nationwide language. For educational and career advances for example. I only recently learned that in 21 of 22 Russian republics children are taught Russian plus some regional language(s). Apparently the same is true in parts of China.
In eastern Ukraine, the language of education had been parental choice. Some time after the 2014 coup, Kiev took that choice away in areas they controlled. In Crimea now I think the educational language is Russian plus choice of Ukrainian or Crimean Tartar. In Odessa the only option is Ukrainian now. Eli from Russia is a redhead blogger from Perm RU. She was taught Russian and Tartar in school. Her mom is pissed that her Tartar skills have lapsed.
I recall that bilingual education was the cool thing in California years ago. It was the Hispanic parents that ended that as their kids had crappy English skills even after HS. The program was more for the benefit of the higher paid ESL teachers.

I played a few documentaries on Chinese history. It is a much different place than the west. Very strange to me. This history, language, and culture influences how they think and act.
Also, there is a whole lot of history. Thousands of years of recorded history. IMO there are likely genetic differences from Caucasians on average. I would like to know more about what the people in Taiwan think and want.
I have heard something several times over many years. The CCP/CPC is very responsive to the what the people want. They are only 8-10% of the population but that is not 0.1%. The party is opaque to me and the west. I read about the Chinese elections. They are strange. Direct at low levels and indirect above those with heavy party influence on the direct elections. The reason I wrote this stuff below is that I have no idea as to why the rocket guys were replaced. it could be SO many reasons having nothing to do with the military.
I just finished the book Red Roulette and returned it to Ramsey county library system.
I could not begin to summarize it. Summarize Chinese history and culture for me. I watched a doc on how some concubine became de-facto ruler of China. Comparing that to present day I do not see much difference. The place intrigue today is incredible. The author was born poor but bright and athletic. He went to US Madison for business then returned and made a fortune. He married a smart, cunning woman who handled the political side and connections. She was later "disappeared." He lives in London with their son.
Macgregor said Xi wakes up every morning wondering how he can hold 1.4B people together and not suffer the same fate as previous emperors.
The author said he had a first dinner at 5 PM with supplicants, then a 6:30 dinner where he was the supplicant (not his words), then an 8 PM dinner with friends and equals because he was drunk by then. The sometimes tea after that. This was in private nightclubs where the firt priority was keeping different groups from seeing each other. That is how business was done.
Another good book was The Party by Macgregor (not the US col). It is dated as back then there was little control or censorship by govt. Now there is.
If you read these two books things will not become clearer. They will become more confused.

I would merely add there has to be a feint on the West coast and lots of air action (and from more than coastal bases)...and those islands (especially close to the mainland are really only most useful for spotting and being the first canaries in the coal mine. Would Russia Aid China In An Invasion Of Taiwan?
If China were to invade Taiwan, it is likely that Russia would provide Beijing with military, economic, or political assistance.
Yes.
Yes, yes and yes.
But on what grounds would Russia assist China? Why would it be willing to aid Beijing in an invasion that would likely be met with a response from the United States and its allies? The most simple answer is because China did it for Russia. Russian President Vladimir Putin is now indebted to Chinese President Xi Jinping, whether he realizes it or not. And no, the debt is not payable by monetary means. Putin will be able to pay his debts to Xi for his assistance in a war that has turned Chinese public opinion toward Ukraine, led to sanctions, and affected Xi’s image by providing assistance if, or when, China invades Taiwan.
To get a better idea of what this assistance could look like, one can take a look at how China has aided Russia’s war in Ukraine. According to U.S. officials, China has helped supply Russia with dual-use material like optics, microelectronics, and drone engines to boost Moscow’s arms production, as well as provided Moscow with cruise missiles and machine tools for ballistic missiles. U.S. intelligence claims that Russian and Chinese groups have worked together to jointly produce drones inside Russia. It was also reported that a Chinese government agency established to promote trade with Russia has been attempting to source drone detectors and jammers, likely to supply Moscow with. U.S. officials further claimed that China helped Russia improve satellite and other space-based capabilities, as well as provided satellite imagery. Additionally, it was reported that China supplied Russia with 90% of the chips it imported in 2023 which were used to make missiles, tanks, and aircraft. The British Defense Minister has also accused China of providing or preparing to provide Russia with lethal aid.
Beyond providing this military equipment, China has continued support for Russia in its wartime by working together to avoid taxes and evade Western sanctions on goods like copper. And, China has increased imports of Russian gas and oil since the war began, as imports from the US, UK, and EU have dropped due to sanctions. Politically, Ukrainian leader Volodymyr Zelenskyy accused China of using its influence and diplomats to help Russia disrupt the 15-16 June peace summit on Ukraine in Switzerland by encouraging other countries not to attend.
Regardless of the exact scenario that could play out, Russia would most likely aid China in some capacity. Whether its military support during the invasion, economic assistance and support following an invasion, or political and diplomatic support, China’s role in the Sino-Russian partnership and demonstrated support for Russia during the war in Ukraine places it in a position to solicit some form of assistance from Moscow during an invasion of Taiwan. While this reasoning could stand on its own, it is supported by U.S. officials’ testimony that the U.S. Department of Defense is reconsidering its planning and preparedness to account for cooperation between Russia and China during a conflict.

Chinese leader Xi Jinping met with US National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan on Thursday at the end of the latter's three day trip to Beijing, which is a first such trip for a sitting US national security adviser in eight years.

"While great changes have taken place in the two countries and in China-U.S. relations, China’s commitment to the goal of a stable, healthy and sustainable China-U.S. relationship remains unchanged," Xi said.

The new government appears to be more focused on repelling invading Chi-Com's and weathering any blockades and strikes.
I hope they have the time to fully implement their preparations and fully man their ranks with adequately trained people.

Possibly, but since the vast majority of advanced CPU's & GPU's are manufactured there by TSMC...it could be a two-fer loss-wise...and I hope in the event the Island falls or looks to be poised to fall to the communists...that the plant and all its records on the island are immolated beyond the slightest possibility of utility to the red devils!

The media recently reported that China’s People’s Liberation Army is building the world’s biggest military base underground in possible preparation for conflict with the United States.
Large enough to fit 10 Pentagons, the new super large facility should not be a surprise - it is a logical and iterative next step of a long program of underground facilities by China. The command center is on the western outskirts of the capital city of Beijing.

The new command center in Beijing is described by online media BulgarianMilitary.com as a “command-and-control center for the PLA in wartime.“ The report notes that ”the site’s sheer scale, combined with its underground elements, points to a design built for survival,“ and ”experts believe that the complex will feature a series of underground nodes, perhaps even a hidden subway system, all interconnected by subterranean passageways.”
When completed, this facility—now dubbed the “Beijing Military City” by Western military analysts—will be the largest underground command center in the world, possibly in history.

In 2023, then-CIA Director William Burns cited U.S. intelligence, saying Xi had ordered the PLA to be ready for invading Taiwan by 2027.
In an email interview with The Epoch Times, retired U.S. Army Reserve Colonel Lawrence Sellin said Beijing has so far “pursued a ‘salami-slice strategy’ using a series of many small actions to produce a much larger result.”
The regime appears to be reluctant to launch an attack or a blockade because such actions “would cause an immediate strong reaction from the United States and regional powers opposed to China’s unlawful expansionism, possibly provoking a major war,” he said, adding, “but that could change.”
Last year, Yuan Hongbing, a former law professor at China’s prestigious Peking University, who has connections in the CCP’s upper echelon, said party leaders were advised to establish a strategy to “solve the Taiwan issue by 2027” in a report penned by top PLA experts.
According to Yuan, the report described the goal as a “political guarantee” for the CCP’s 21st National Congress, which is set for 2027, to go smoothly, suggesting CCP elites have banked the party’s legitimacy on absorbing the self-ruled island.
Meanwhile, the recent disappearance of the PLA’s third in command, second-ranked vice chairman of the CCP’s Central Military Commission, Gen. He Weidong, has led to speculations on whether Xi is losing grip on power, and whether a coup would accelerate or hamper the CCP’s plan to invade Taiwan.
On how the United States should react, Perry said anything that hampers the CCP’s oppression of the Chinese people and slows the spread of communism around the world is “a good thing,” but the United States can’t “just sit back and hope that that occurs organically.”

I think there is a lot of pressure on them to invade earlier rather than later...and this is a clear imperative to get the Ukraine BS over as soon as possible.

I would advise caution in any information released by the Chi-Com's re:purpose and targets, using actual actions and your own recorded data of their movements, communications etc as assessment items more than what they say.
