I have been watching some videos about life in the USSR. In one they showed the various lines you had to wait in to buy something in a store. You lined up to pay at one window then took your receipt to another window where you waited to have a clerk bring out what you bought.
Self service was a new concept that the USSR got from the US.
Now I see this.
