When I read about Russians failing in some awkward poisoning attempt like poison on a doorknob or poison in underwear I am skeptical.

Besides that, there are a number of alarm bells going off with this guy...
We are to believe a smart fella (everybody seems to agree with this) who has nothing controversial in social media or acquaintances (though there is possibly something about changes after a back injury surgery that needs to be explored) who grew up privileged (their word not mine, but he wasn't middle or lower class family) has a couple degrees from Penn and travels from Atlanta (doing what?) to NYC, stays in a hostel and flirts with a check in gal and drops his mask, gets a drink at a Starbucks...whacks Thompson...walks off takes a bike to Central Park and then buses to Altoona, PA and gets recognized by a McDonalds employee and he has the fake ID's, pistol and "manifesto" (and mentions Kaczynski) etc on him...
And this guy is "smart"?
Ted Kaczynski was crazy smart and it took a lot longer for him to be tracked down...
Either this guy wanted to get caught and/or wanted to take credit for this...or he's a patsy...eh?

If the "manifesto" at the end is real then it appears he had a personal grudge specifically for United Healthcare...
Though, again I harp on the "intelligence" thing again...an intelligent person should know that murdering a CEO is not going to drive change within that CEO's business or anybody else's business in that or any industry... In fact it will cause a circle-the-wagons response that will only make private security firms wealthier with a lot more business, Luigi Mangione is their Santa Claus and the gifts will be rolling in for years to come. And no, this will not get United Healthcare or any insurer to change policies. The allegations of fraud involving insider sales before news of a US DOJ investigation broke in a pension fund class action suit likely would have a lot more impact on business policy than murdering a CEO. So I think we can dispense with talk of how intelligent this idiot is. Sanity however is yet to be determined...

Lack of evidence for the lawyer (likely hired by the family, yes?) is not going beyond gun charge and such...they're busy gathering what they can still all along the trail...and by fighting extradition the defense is participating in allowing more time too...

Briana Boston, 42, had just had a medical claim denied and was talking on a phone call with a representative from Blue Cross Blue Shield. The Lakeland resident then allegedly said: “Delay, deny, depose. You people are next.”

"By complicating a simple case, [Manhattan District Attorney Alvin] Bragg has increased the risk of acquittal on the most serious charge and a hung jury on any charge," he argues. "Since Mr. Mangione is already being celebrated by some as a folk hero because of his rage against the American health care system, the terrorism charge, which alleges that Mr. Mangione 'intended to intimidate or coerce a civilian population, influence the policies of a unit of government' and 'affect the conduct of a unit of government,' almost certainly will turn the case into political theater."

Federal prosecutors will pursue the death penalty for Luigi Mangione in the murder of a health insurance executive in New York, the Department of Justice (DOJ) announced Tuesday.
Attorney General Pam Bondi said she is directing prosecutors to seek Mangione’s execution “after careful consideration” in alignment with President Donald Trump’s mission “to stop violent crime and Make America Safe Again” in a press release Tuesday. Mangione faces charges in federal, New York and Pennsylvania courts over the shooting death of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson in December, a case that became a symbol of outrage toward America’s healthcare system.
“The murder was an act of political violence,” the DOJ said. “Mangione’s actions involved substantial planning and premeditation and because the murder took place in public with bystanders nearby, may have posed grave risk of death to additional persons.”

Why is this a federal crime?

Interestingly enough this started under Garland...where the government alleged the premeditated planning and stalking of his victim with the intent to murdering him, which involved crossing many state lines (what they called "interstate stalking" and "use of interstate facilities" causing death) , and for using a silencer on a gun used in the commission of a crime are federal crimes.
As is true in most crimes, the federal violations are more severe. And in this case NY ended capital punishment...Trump reinstated it at the federal level...something, ironically, I guess Garland didn't expect when he filed federal charges on Mangione.
