On early Thursday morning, President Donald Trump wrote on Truth Social:
"The airplane was on a perfect and routine line of approach to the airport. The helicopter was going straight at the airplane for an extended period of time. It is a CLEAR NIGHT, the lights on the plane were blazing, why didn't the helicopter go up or down, or turn. Why didn't the control tower tell the helicopter what to do instead of asking if they saw the plane. This is a bad situation that looks like it should have been prevented. NOT GOOD!!!"

1-Blackhawks are all-weather and flying "dark" to commercial trackers like ADSB
2-Blackhawks have no problem flying at night
The comment by the controller above makes sense...he the helo thought he had the proper plane in sight, yet didn't deviate his track, the ATC should have spoken up to clarify the American track and runway its approaching...
Bad situation, hard hit for families...but I hope it was a ATC error and mis-ID by the helo and not anything worse than that.

Update (1628ET):
The air traffic control tower at Ronald Reagan National Airport was understaffed at the time of the mid-air collision between a commercial jet and a US Army helicopter that killed 67 people.
CNN cited an aviation insider who said one air traffic controller at Reagan Tower was working two different tower positions at the time.

The source describes the set-up, which had one person handling both local and helicopter traffic, as not uncommon.

OK, well...we should have taken Trump's hints in the presser...

If this proves to be correct, it does not remove any understaffed/underqualified/DEI issues of the ATC's (https://www.zerohedge.com/political/trump-targets-dei-hiring-practices-after-deadly-crash-near-reagan-national-airport)
...it just means there is a darker disturbing primary cause here... I think protocol going forward in such situations will be including the possible authorization to the other party in an immanent collision to abort and perform an emergency maneuver to evade.

One of his questions above hints at a possible motive (who was on the plane)...another question in light of the first article if it proves to be accurate (or not) that that person was piloting...is what would the DeepState motive be to do this? ON the one hand this seems to vindicate Trump's DEI concern if the ID of the pilot matches...on the other if that person is not the pilot the motive would have to match the guys questions above about who was on the plane. Also, if piloted why did the other two onboard not act if something looked horribly off?
Anyway, between ATC, helo crew and plane passenger list...lot's to unpack...

...and typically for commercial pilots 1000-1500 hours is considered experienced for helo's...EMS/aerial firefighting 2000-2500 and the latter considered for most roles as "experienced"...
So, in this case...not super experienced, we don't know if NVG use was in play (could cause limited vision/no peripheral...can cause flaring when encountering light sources that could be momentarily disorienting)...and combined with ATC issues might be more of a combined failure...
Plus, if training for a "continuity of government" VIP transport...the experience level here for the busy Potomac traffic may not have been adequate for a night op...
However, this may or may not be material...it could be that they merely want to shut down reaction posts and avoid the ad hom hits...or it could be there is unflatering posts by the deceased...

Joe Biden’s failed Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg blamed President Trump for the helicopter-plane collision near Reagan Airport.
An American Airlines flight carrying approximately 64 souls collided with a Blackhawk helicopter near Washington D.C. Reagan National Airport (DCA) last Wednesday evening.
All 67 people perished.
Buttigieg blamed Trump even though there have been aviation staffing shortages for years. 285 of the 313 air traffic control facilities are dealing with staffing shortages.
The FAA turned away 1,000 air traffic controller applicants because of Marxist DEI policies, but Buttigieg blamed the crash on Trump.
“They can’t spin this away. The Trump administration contacted air traffic controllers, offering buyouts to leave their jobs. It’s a very easily proven fact,” Buttigieg said.
This is a lie. Air traffic controllers were NOT ELIGIBLE for Trump’s buyout offer.
