Those guys steal the vehicles and either don't care if you know them, some of them want you to know they are gangsters.

ETA: It is also probable the the lead car (Mini Cooper) were not lookout/protection as much as they were bosses assuring job completion.  They prefer to fight out of Suburbans or four door pickups.
