Don't get that channel, if somebody out there watches it, post a review for us, eh?

It's all on youtube,I've posted vids of that before.

Going to check into the show, it may be a new one.

Oh, it's still that one? I thought it was something new, sorry for my confusion.

The Youtube was the pilot for Doomsday Preppers. There is going to be a new series on NatGeo starting Feb. 7th. I'll definitely be checking this out. I watched the youtube pilot and it's making me feel like our preps so far are rather inadequate. These people are way ahead of us. I am so jealous of the multi-family compound in SC (LOVED the farmhouse!) with one of the husband's being ex-military with tactical combat training. We have a few friends who are like-minded but have chosen other places to prep and bug out to if SHTF, closer to their families.
I've been watching Independence USA. Frank is a fireman who is prepping for TEOTWAWKI. His adventures involve him trying to learn new survival skills. Show #1 focused on bow hunting and making his own bow. Show #2 is about building an outdoor kitchen (a large gazebo) and using a gasifier truck he purchased to run a generator to power lights in the gazebo. Show #3 focused on Frank's adventures building his own cannon and making his own lead shot (pouring melted lead through a screen into a bucket of water). So far this show is entertaining but not that informative.

Be on in a few.

Been waiting all week and missed it, dang.
Maybe it'll repeat.

Watched it last night. Liberals are so cute when they prep. (http://video.nationalgeographic.com/video/national-geographic-channel/shows/doomsday-preppers/ngc-doris-day-of-doom/)
You see, morally she is against guns, they are actively encouraging others to prep and learn, so everyone around them knows what they are doing, and they are going to rely on the community and relationships with others to protect them. Maybe one of their friends in the community owns a gun. They better hope so, though I am not sure she would consent to be friends with such a person. However she is friends with a guy who suggests that he will smile and invite any marauders to dinner, check them out and then poison them if he doesn't think they will add to the group. killing with guns bad. Killing by poison? That is fine.
"Our security comes not from stockpiling weapons, but from having a community that respects each other, supports each other, and we have each other's backs"
Its hysterical. I am taking bets that one of her "community", probably a close friend, maybe the poison using guy, will kill her shortly after if TEOTWAKI goes down.
Probably with a firearm . Liberals have no restraining ethics or principles, and they will turn on each other in a second.

Excellent show. NatGeo treats these folks with a great deal of respect, which is good. Best tip: rub your fresh eggs with a little mineral oil. The eggs will have a shelf life of up to 9 months.
One couple has 4 adult children who each specialize in some survival skill - one is IT/systems for security, one is metalworking/woodworking/tooling, etc. , one is in charge of fuel and has been stockpiling wood, and one is in charge of weapons. Wish I had more kids and they were all grown up. So jealous!

Liberals are so inconsistent. She's counting on a "respectful, supportive" community to provide protection? Why doesn't she expect the same community to feed and house her then? Idiot knows exactly zero about human nature and obviously never watched Jericho. ::evilbat::

They don't think. They feel. Are your emotions consistent? Mine aren't. This person probably votes for cradle to grave care provided by the enslavement of others, and then worries that the "White Knight" of government won't be there to save her, but sees in that an opportunity to be the White Knight herself! When a Liberal does work, it is only for ego gratification. She feels that she will be in a position to help others and that they will owe her, and admire her, and therefore NOT shoot her though the head, slit her throat in the night or poison her and take what she has worked for ( while she thinks nothing of voting to take what others have worked for through coercive force) She would rather die than compromise her ego's need to believe that she is morally superior, and in the end, she will probably get her wish. I am sure nothing could have made her happier than getting a National audience to preen herself in front of.
-
True dat.
What's that which is said about liberals; they'd rather see a woman raped and strangled with her own pantyhose than use a gun to kill a rapist.
So, "precious" gets her five minutes of fame .... and probably an ignominious end.
-
"I am taking bets that one of her "community", probably a close friend, maybe the poison using guy, will kill her shortly after if TEOTWAKI goes down."
Community marauder, after dispatching Precious - "Damn, look at all this cool stuff! Sure glad you weren't armed and loath violence! This place is great!"

I wish I knew where this comunity was so I could watch over them till I needed what they have. I don't do poisin But it's faster and cleaner. But I haven't watched it yet.I fell asleep waiting but I did use my TIVO.And it does repeat om several nights.

In anticipation of the premiere of Doomsday Preppers tomorrow night, we wanted to give bloggers in the prepping community an opportunity to share their thoughts – after all, they’re the real experts! We sent each of the following bloggers a copy of the show – check out their reviews below to find out what they thought and whether they’ll be tuning in each week for more. And should you decide you’d like to make a few preparations of your own after seeing the first episode, look no further than these blogs to get started: Link (http://tvblogs.nationalgeographic.com/2012/02/06/the-doomsday-preppers-blog-carnival/)
and ETA: edit what appeared to be an encyclopedia was a circular waste.

I just watched it without falling asleep. And even though I think some of them need help mentally they did have some good stuff to use in our own cases.Hand warmers as oxygen removers is great and storing cheese in Cheese wax and the eggs in mineral oil is great too.
I just happened to have gone out and added to my preps today taking advantage of some sales around town.

40' shipping containers seem to be the rage. Apparently you can pick one up for $2500. Sure enough, I saw some on ebay for $2500-$3000. One guy on last night's show was planning on burying 3 containers for an underground bunker and to protect electrical assets from EMP. Would make a hell of a good root cellar, too, I'd imagine.
-
How far underground do you have to go? If grounded will the container act as a Faraday Cage?
-
If so, you could install a grounding system and sell 'em on ebay for 10.

The containers are all welded, andif buried should have a find ground contact. Yes they should work as a faraday cage.
-
Cool. Might have to look into this.

Cool. Might have to look into this.
If burying is the plan, the roof will need reinforcing. They are stackable because the weight on top rests on the corners, not on the top itself.

Very true. But thankfully the width isn't a big deal and one center support in the form of wood beams or metal I beam will do nicely.Depending on how much weight were talking about in other words how deep you're planning on going. And don't forget to waterproof it.

How about this?Just food for thought.

You don't need a separate ground...

Obama keeps it up and this will be viable.
I like that Faraday cage.
The F150, it's got the ECM and what other chips are necessary
after an EMP? Or is it even worth the thought?
-
I wish I knew.
My '37 will still run because all I have to do is replace the condenser - it has no electronics ::cool::

Will pulling the battery cables help protect it?

I don't believe that batteries are susceptible to EMP. Transistors and integrated circuits are. I wouldn't care to test that theory however. My '37 has a battery disconnect switch (poorman anti-theft) and I turn it on when I want to go for a ride.

The reason I ask is because I'm not much on electronics but I would think that if no power is going in all they are is a nothing.
-
Container support - I would think treated wood for supports above assisted by 4x4 pilings on the side would work, and a good quality tarp for waterproofing would do the trick.
Garbage can Faraday cage - Interesting, simple, hate to have to find out the hard way if it works against EMP, but what the heck, better than nothing.
Biogas plant - OK this one looks beyond my ability.
Electronics - Don't certain components (capacitors etc) retain a small charge, and if so, wouldn't they be subject to potential damage if hit?
-
Apparently existing current flow in an electronic component makes no difference pro or con to the susceptibility to EMP. There are reports of products containing electronic circuitry sitting on the shelf in their original packaging being fried by the induced voltage spikes. I'm still looking around but here is an interesting article on EMP: http://standeyo.com/News_Files/NBC/EMP.protection.html (http://standeyo.com/News_Files/NBC/EMP.protection.html)

Huh, then according to that link the garbage can should work for sensitive equipment. Now all I need is a reaaly big garbage can to drive my SUV into. Oh, the cargo container!
-
The magnetic waves can run along telephone wires or fences and they love car antennas. If there's a crack
hole, vent, anything like that they'll run through the whole device.
Roughly put, IRRC, the EMP only lasts a millisecond that's why it doesn't bother analogue electronics
they are course and insensitive just like us. That's right we could be standing next to our electronic car
an EMP with a zillion volts occur and it would be so short a time span that we would not feel it or
be harmed but the electronic in that car would melt.

Poor Taurus. RIP
I saw some of the metal trash cans at Fleet Farm this morning. I took the day off as my SUV was in for work, the rental is a Mazda 3 so no room for trash cans! But I'll pick up a few on the way to the lake next weekend.
