Pretty good size dwelling there, not sure every end of that is well heated, and not sure how much that greenhouse provides, but he's got his own critters and taking an elk if the need arises looks like an option. Heck, he's got more than I do.

All it takes is money...if you don't have it, pool together the family & like-minded, I guess that's the answer. Just hard to do that nowdays, what with people spread about, jobs & kids to deal with during the wait, not to mention getting everybody on the same page.

Finding friends and family to pool resources, planning, labor, and expertise has been our biggest challenge. We're basically going it alone so far. Things have to get much worse to wake most people up, and by then it will be too late.

Hey, I resemble that remark!

Anyway, my next push is to get my clan thinking about developing post-apocalypse skill sets. I'm looking into smithing.

I think you need to look into the lost art of making your own charcoal first.

Great layout, but I'm not fond of the hostile environment. Coon-asses are allergic to cold weather.

I have a buddy who is doing the blacksmithing bit. Built his own forge. Natural Gas is probably the better fuel if its available. (Green) Coal after that (you can coke it yourself) and only as a last resort can you use charcoal. In medieval times that is what the apprentices did, shovel charcoal nearly continuously. Tons of it. There was a dirty jobs on charcoal production (http://dsc.discovery.com/videos/dirty-jobs-charcoal-factory-worker.html)

I think the gas route is best. All ya gotta do is store it.
