Did anyone really need a video to have this "explained" (http://finance.yahoo.com/blogs/daily-ticker/looming-threat-gas-prices-strait-hormuz-explained-134550480.html)
I guess I got more confirmation that the Strait currently transports 20% of the world supply, but it seems longer term that most of Saudi Oil would find its way in pipeline or other methods to the Red Sea. (http://www.globalresearch.ca/index.php?aid=28516&context=va) Same seems to be true of Iraq (http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/shared/spl/hi/middle_east/02/iraq_key_maps/html/oil_fields.stm) and of Syria (http://industrializedcyclistnotes.com/2012/02/06/another-mid-east-pipeline-map/)
So yeah, Iran could strike at oil fields and a full blown war could stop/hinder production, but the Strait itself doesn't seem to pose that big of a threat. There are other routes, most which venture via Suez anyway. So yeah, is seems there are ways to get around Hormuz if it was required, and most of those ways would be cheaper than an armed conflict to oust Iran from the area. Of course, Obama's handlers are probably counting on this to justify a war, rationing, and more government interference here at home.

Threatening the straigt is psychological more than anything, there is a lot of traffic through there, any closure would send a bad signal, and the pipelines ending in Syria are problematic given the situation there, thanks ot Obama's continuing Arab Spring fiasco, but Turkey & SA remain open.

Any closure of the straight could be cleared in less than a week ( along with the complete elimination of what Iran calls a "navy" ) . I say bring it on !

The straigt is a sideshow, Iran knows it cannot prevail and we know he'd only be making it easier for us to intervene if they did. So they'll continue to mouth off and scoot their little boats around, but they have to be suicidal (well, they are suicidal!) to piss everyone off and mess with this gateway.
