A Nebraska school district asked a deaf preschooler to change his sign language name because they believe the hand motion he used looked like he was shooting a gun. (http://stlouis.cbslocal.com/2012/08/28/family-school-made-deaf-child-change-sign-name-said-it-looked-like-gun/#respond)
The family of 3-year-old Hunter Spanjer said that their deaf son’s sign gesture violates the Grand Island Public Schools weapons policy.
“He’s deaf, and his name sign, they say, is a violation of their weapons policy,” Brian Spanjer.
Hunter’s father, told Nebraska based news channel KOLN. “It’s a symbol. It’s an actual sign, a registered sign, through (Signing Exact English).”
He also started a Facebook page in an effort to support his son’s sign name, which has garnered nearly 1,000 supporters as of Tuesday afternoon.
The Grand Island school district is hoping to come to a solution to the sign gesture soon.
“We are working with the parents to come to the best solution we can for the child,” Jack Sheard, Grand Island Public Schools spokesperson, told KOLN.
The ACLU is backing the Spanjer family, asking the school district to reconsider making Hunter change his sign gesture.

I just dug around and found a local TV station story on this. The kid signs his name, which is Hunter, by crossing the first two fingers of both hands and flicking them up and down. The gesture is rapid, but it would look sorta, kinda, maybe like you're shooting two pistols. But it's not like he's cocking back his thumbs, or pulling them out of imaginary holsters, or aiming them at your head...and as a deaf kid the gesture certainly isn't accompanied by him going pow! pow! pow! It looks as much like his drumming with his hands as anything else."

How long until a name like "Hunter" is verboten because of some insane policy? It's bizarrely amusing when different components of Political Correctness are at odds with each other. Here we have the disability/ADA thing against the hoplophobic/anti-gun thing. Watch for exploding heads.

I know very little sign language....but one sign comes to mind as a response to THAT request.

The boy is a 3 year-old pre-schooler. There are official government-district pre-schools now?
In any case, the totalitarians sure are starting to indoctrinate the kids earlier and earlier.
I'd be damned if I'd send my deaf child off to pre-school.

I didn't see in the piece anywhere that it was a school for the deaf. What I do see is a deaf child, little more than a baby really, being thrown to the tender mercies of the government wolves instead of being helped by his parents to learn how to function in a "noisy world".

In Scandinavian parts like Minnie, Gunnar's can still be found. Almost makes me want to legally change my name, but I respect my heritage and family too much to do it.

The town of Ballard (now consumed by Seattle) has a heavy Scandinavian/Norwegian population. Same for Skagit County in the northern part of the state.
This story makes me want to change my name to "FU" so that I could introduce myself to them.

I've read another account whereby the school administrator avers the "sign is not appropriate for school", so they want the kid to spell out his name by letters instead of using the one sign-language signal for it.
I'd like to know what adverse effect these rocket scientists *think* will have on other 3 year-olds.

You want me to change his name? Sure. Its now him pointing his finger at your head and pretending to fire a gun. Now don't say another word or the district is going to court over a Freedom of Expression violation, and my family is going to get millions of dollars- because what Jury to going to side with you when a) it doesn't look anything like a gun b) my child is disabled and has enough issues in his life without having to spell his name out so satisfy a bunch of bullying stupid hoplophobes hell bent on social engineering a war on little boys. Even deaf ones. .

What always amazes me is that you know this starts with an idiot libtard teacher, and the principle, who should know better, doubles down. Then the District superintendent doubles down. And on what? Sign Language. Even if one student "mock shot" another on the playground ( in the 2nd grade "War" among the boys using our hands as guns was a common game) it shouldn't be something that administration can say anything about. Its a sign used in a f'ing game - one you don't want played because you can't stand the thought of any more Alpha males being produced. It keeps coming back to this:

I would have made this into one big, fat joke. I would have poured ridicule down on them. Dad should have told the school not to worry, he only allows his son to carry blanks for his finger and can only target practice with adult supervision. I'd comfort the school and advise them he'll have his son holster his weapon. Better yet, I'd ask how they want to handle the "no guns in school" with his son...Like maybe cut his hands off.
And If I had a carried...it would be visible on my belt. These asshats need to see what a real gun looks like. You couldn't blow thier brains out, so what's thier concern.
