Yep Prices are about 1/2 of what they were.  I bought my Solarworld 245 mono modules at $510 a panel,  if you buy by the pallet the Solar world 255 Monos are running around $310- If you are going to jump on Solar, this would be a good time.  I think he is right this is inventory blowout.. I was actually expecting to see it earlier..  Could have dropped the price of my system by around $5000 - Woulda Coulda Shoulda.  Of course, I have power today.. and this takes a while.

However the panels are really NOT the major cost factor..   You need inverters, and if you want backup batteries, those cost too..  Outback has a new model "Radian" inverter - 8Kw, 48V battery inverter  for around $4000 - add two charge controllers ($1000)  and you have a core at around $5000 ( about $1000 less than what I paid)  Then its up to you as to Battery Bank sizing. That could be $500 of deep cycle marine batteries  and a couple of hours backup  (they will last 5-7 years) or it could be $10K of industrial strength, deep discharge batts  and 3-4 days of emergency power which should last for 20 years.  Then add on money for trenching, cable runs and racks and you have added another $5-10K depending on the installation.  No it isn't cheap.  At CURRENT rates it will NEVER pay off.  If, however, you expect Obama to make good on his promise to make electrcity rates skyrocket,  you may find in the end that it was worth the upfront costs.   The core of the system costs just a bit more than a  good diesel backup generator.  You can then add Panels and battery capacity as you can afford it.
