A West Virginia student was charged with causing a disruption at a middle school when he refused to remove a T-shirt that displayed the National Rifle Association's logo and hunting rifle.
Jared Marcum, 14, said the shirt did not violate Logan Middle School's dress code policy.
‘I was surprised. It shocked me that the school didn't know their own dress code and their own policy,' Marcum said in a telephone interview. 'I figured they would have known not to call me out on that shirt because there was nothing wrong with it.'
Marcum's stepfather, Allen Lardieri, said the youth was waiting in line in the school cafeteria Thursday when a teacher ordered the eighth-grader to remove the T-shirt or to turn it inside out.
Marcum said he was sent to the office where he again refused the order.
‘When the police came, I was still talking and telling them that this was wrong, that they cannot do this, it's not against any school policy. The officer, he told me to sit down and be quiet. I said, “No, I'm exercising my right to free speech.” I said it calmly,’ he said.
Police charged him with disrupting an educational process and obstructing an officer, he said.
‘The only disturbance was caused by the teacher. He raised his voice,’ he said.
The Associated Press typically does not identify juveniles charged with crimes, but Marcum and his family wanted his name and case known.
A call to the Logan Police Department rang unanswered on Sunday and an automated message said the voice mail system was full.
Lardieri said Marcum wore the shirt during five class periods before he was ordered to remove it.
Logan County Schools' dress code, which is posted on the school system's website, prohibits clothing and accessories that display profanity, violence, discriminatory messages or sexually suggestive phrases.
Clothing displaying advertisements for any alcohol, tobacco, or drug product also is prohibited.
Their lawyer, Ben White, said that the T-shirt did not appear to violate any school policy.
‘I just don't understand why this teacher reacted the way he did,’ said White, who said he asked school officials to preserve surveillance video of the cafeteria.
White said he planned to meet Monday with Principal Ernestine Sutherland.
A message left Sunday at a phone listing for an Ernestine Sutherland in Logan wasn't immediately returned.
White said schools can place restrictions on students to prevent disruptions, but can't take away their First Amendment right to free speech.
‘If a teacher is telling you to do something that's wrong, I don't think you should follow it. But I also don't think you need to do it in a disrespectful way,’ he said, adding that he does not think Marcum was disrespectful.
White said he also wants to get the criminal charges dropped.

This should result in a lawsuit and the teacher needs to be terminated.

Persecute the Bitter Clingers!
Lets see, the NRA promotes the Second Amendment and gun owner-ship underneath that law. They, in effect, promote the law. So the objection to the T-shirt is? Guns are scary? Guns can only be used for violence? Many schools used to have target shooting teams not that long ago.
Oh, I see, its fundamentally about expressing opinions that are not approved by the Liberals in the school- they interfere with the indoctrinations that are the goal of the school. We must make an example of this so his classmates see what will happen to those who think for themselves.
There will be no justice forthcoming untill these teachers are dragged from thier jobs, tarred and feathered and run out of town.

It wasn't that long ago in America that rural schools would have so many absences on the opening day of deer season that lots of them simply closed school on that day.
Now this. In West Virginia even.

Doesn't sound like they ban religious stuff either, so I guess the Wiccan Pride shirts and Allah is Awesome shirts gets a pass...get a t-shirt with Jesus holding an AK and the words "Molon Labe", it might fly...then again, there mere pictorial of a weapon sends libiots with an agenda into full-blown fascist mode. Screw 'em anyway, wear the NRA shirt again!

Been thinking about this since it was posted. Could it be there is less huntable land, fewer places to hunt making it more difficult and expensive for the average father & son to go hunting. When that happens the tradition s t o p s.

Speaking of tradition...who farms anymore? Families? If I am not mistaken most farms are big corporate run outfits now, right? And punitive tax laws more than helped that situation to change.
I had my book/discussion portion of firearms training in my Junior High School...we all had our own or a family rifle...right there in the Junior High cafeteria. When was the last time you saw that? I bet three, perhaps closer to four decades!
The Left has been busy destroying everything with links to our treasured past. Break the links, re-write history and extablish a new set of made up "traditions" in its place.
We've been Comintern'd day by day, year by year! ::gaah::

Land is valuable, when it is passed on the family can't pay the inheritance tax. The number one reason family farms have diminished.

I plan to live forever and grant my children power of attorney.
What?!? My dad is still alive. Prove he isn't.
Again, they rely oh so heavily on voluntary reporting and compliance.
If Obama can have 26 different SNs from different states he never lived in, I suspect they won't figure out I am dead, even when I am 228.

I like the way you think Weisshaupt! ::thumbsup::

Teen Suspended for Wearing Gun T-Shirt Returns to School - Wearing the Same Shirt!
...and he wasn't alone (http://cnsnews.com/blog/gregory-gwyn-williams-jr/teen-suspended-wearing-gun-t-shirt-returns-school-wearing-same-shirt)
Jared Marcum, an 8th grade student at Logan Middle School in Logan, West Virginia who was suspended and arrested by police for refusing to remove his gun t-shirt, has now returned to school - wearing the exact same t-shirt!
And, he wasn't alone.
Jared returned to school on Monday with many supporters greeting him outside.
"There's a lot of people wearing this same exact shirt, showing great, great support and I really appreciate it," Jared said before walking in to school.
According to WOWKTV, Marcum returned to class, fresh off of suspension, wearing the shirt that got him suspended from school after a dispute with a teacher. The shirt that began the controversy has an image of a gun on the front.
In the incident that sparked the controversy, Marcum was arrested by local police and faces two potential charges, obstructing an officer and disrupting the education process.
However, Jared's lawyer, Ben White says that "Charges aren't officially filed or brought until the prosecuting attorney's signs off on them and they don't do that willy nilly. They do that after a thorough investigation."
That investigation is currently underway, led by juvenile prosecutor, Sabrina Deskins.

One of the central goals of communism, elimination of inheritance.

If the youth of America had any rebelliousness to authority that their grandparents had...there would be millions of school kids sporting NRA t-shirts in support of this young man!
Instead, it has become cool to be stooges for the state, for conformity to the statist agenda.
CO's link in the other thread citing Lenin and his brainwashing of the youth is validated.
How sick sorry and sad!

This indoctrinator...aka teacher...is solely to blame. Pushing the whole "Guns are bad"meme on the public's dime should be a dismissable offfense, but I'd prefer Weisshaupt's solution.
-
Tar, feathers & rail out of town?
Yes, as a minimum, I support that solution.
