Yeah, wasn't he Time magazine's Man of the Year too? They've always always always had an authority fetish. They are predisposed to being attracted to the idea of a strong leader surrounded by a small elite making all the decisions, because they are at their core arrogant and egotistical. They assume they are qualified to make up this small elite.
All the different types of government -- fascism, communism, despotism, monarchy -- don't really differ in one thing, and that's the fact that they're all authoritarian. That's the common thread to these people who are currently using the Progressive moniker. They're authoritarians and they'll easily drift back and forth from the Swastika to the Hammer & Sickle depending on which one they can currently put the best spin on, because the details don't matter so long as the result is an all powerful state with them in the driver's seat.

Indeed, the system labels don't matter, nor the title - Emperor, King, Dictator, Dear Leader, Chairman, Czar, Governor, Director, President, Grand Poohbah...the power that comes with authoritarian control is their siren song...
