The parents don't understand what the children are, or how the children are, being taught and can't help them. For me, that is, and would be if I were a parent, a BIG F*CKING RED FLAG! Can you add/subtract/multiply/divide/spell/read? Then why can't you understand how and what your elementary school-age kids are being taught? The problem isn't you and it isn't your kid.
The new/er pedagogies of teaching, the curricula, and particularly Common Core, are not designed, despite written goals, to teach to enlightenment and skill in any area. They are designed to confuse, obfuscate and enstupidate. The proof is there, right before our eyes, in the arithmetic problems and the many, many steps to solving them, instead of the simplest, clearest methods of instruction.
Cue the video of the mother before the school board schooling them in the eighteen steps to solve a simple arithmetic equation being taught at her kid's school. And note, I did NOT write "her student's school" because they are first, last and always your children; children is what they are, being a student is what they do.
If that were my little girl, I'd be getting her out of government school so fast the edumakashun officials' heads would spin.
