What can you say about this?
The idiot lied about the story when it originally happened and he's been lying about it for the last eleven years or so.
Williams had two and only two options when this hit the fan:
1) Come completely clean, tell the truth...that he lied about it from the start and embellished it even more over the years or,
2) Offer a combo phony "fake but accurate" claim coupled with a HRC "can't remember anything" defense.
Telling the truth is out because that instantly torpedoes his career. Going with option 2 will either buy him a few more days or (since this is NBC we are talking about) offer a fig leaf to hide behind until it blows over.
If he had the worst ratings on tv AND was close to retirement he would get the Dan Rather treatment almost automatically. If he was the sort of person who made a hobby out of antagonizing and irritating everyone within sight and sound of his voice he would get the Olbermann treatment.
He is neither and this is NBC so my bet is that he is safe. Disgraced forever but safe from termination.
EDIT:
Link to Breitbart story of Willaims' original news report of the incidentThe video report is, at best, deceptive and gives the impression that Williams was very close to the action where a CH47 was hit with a rocket. He wasn't close and gives no indication that he wasn't anywhere near the chopper...not physically near or chronologically near. So, this is a lie by omission where you are led to believe something happened because key information is purposefully left out. This news report is a big nothing burger but the producers edited the story to make it look much more consequential than it was so they didn't come away with a big zero. Williams participated in the fake but accurate story and then let his imagination run wild with it in the next decade or so.
