As I read more and more of the predictable calls to remove the Confederate flag from the SC capitol grounds, and elsewhere, I find myself becoming more strident in wanting to defend its presence.  It has little to do with the Confederate flag itself, and more to do with opposing the incessant ratcheting incrementalism of the Left's culture war.

It will proceed to the point where flags and symbols of any white, Western country are likewise called symbols of racism, oppression, and totally inappropriate in the public sphere.  Look at the UK.  The flag of England (the St. George flag) is already being treated that way.  The US flag isn't escaping this either, as we've already seen with schools banning it because it "offends" Mexicans

The irony of the confederate flag is that DEMOCRATS are the ones that put them in those statehouses,  not Republicans.

But they manage to put Republicans on the defensive about it.

Housekeeping note:  I merged Libertas' and Glock's threads and moved to General.

I saw two instances of Confederate monuments and cemetery headstones defaced; Walmart and eBay and other retailers (some of whom will still sell Nazi-themed merchandise) announced they'll  no longer sell Confederate flags and there's this ...

IMHO, if it wasn't for the South this country would have long been destroyed as we know it. The Southern people and their culture is one I greatly respect and honor. They are some of the most Godly, Gracious, Kind, Moral-God Fearing........... people I have ever meant. The Southern Evangelicals IMHO is the only thing that is restraining the Lord from bringing severe judgement on this country. The Southern Evangelicals not only produce some of the finest Preachers, Christian Leaders and Christians this country has to offer. They also support and LOVE Israel and the Jews more than the Jews love themselves. Truly remarkable.

I don't see many Americans wanting to go to where I live here up North in Minnesocold not that I would not welcome my Southern Brothers and Sisters with open arms but why would you want to come here where leftism rules. I sure see many more Americans wanting to move South where families and businesses flourish.

As someone with ancestry that does not go back very far back into American History I admit I can see both sides of the issue and I am not much emotionally involved in the flag other than to say I agree with Glock that once the flag is banned whats next. I feel the left so hates the South that this is just the tip of the iceberg. I don't think the left really cares one way or the other about the flag but for the left this is just one part they can use (don't let a crisis go to waste) of achieving their evil goal in trying to destroying the South.

And Amazon and Wally-World has announced that they are pulling any confederate-themed merchandise from the shelves.

At the Freepers I fight the union side of the civil war. I never disparage the confederate soldier or the southern people - I limit my comments to historical anecdotes and war strategy. But because I'm "on the other side" I've gotten a lot of heat from neo-confederates who are up in arms over these recent events. They are in such a lather that they can't hear me agreeing with them.

This isn't going to turn out well for anyone.

No, it's not going to end well for anyone.  What's next, will they pull reruns of the Dukes of Hazzard because the car is called the General Lee and has a Confederate battle flag on its roof?  Or will they just digitally remove it?

I understand why those people are in a lather, it's because the sh*t simply will not stop.  A new day, a new assault on who and what you are.  After a while people forget about engaging in debate about things, and they just go directly into a retaliatory mode.  When you hurl unending insult at someone after a while they just decide to turn the insult into a badge of honor.

It's merely the latest evidence that the USA is an artificial, non-viable construct.  320 million people, and sizable chunks of that 320 million totally resent being subject to the governance and cultural expectations of the rest.  The only way such an arrangement lasts for any length of time is for one of those cohorts to be the dominant one, like Russia was toward the other nations that made up the USSR.  In our case, it's the coastal Northeast that functions as the dominant cohort.  We'll see how long it can last.  Tick tock I say.

It isn't just the assault - it's that so much of the assault (sell-out?) is coming from "our side". I wouldn't be surprised if this spells the end of Nikki Haley's career. I saw hundreds of people who vow to turn their backs on her - the way she's turned her back on them.

I don't think that any of them were ever gonna vote for Jeb  or Lindsay but there have been other pubbies who have said "time to retire it" and now are gonna get some nasty blowback. As well they should.
