I recall years ago most in Taiwan called themselves Chinese. The US pumped money into NGOs etc. and they called themselves Taiwanese. not sure of the percents. Not sure of what percent want to be not independent. How many would be willing to fight?

Also, the US govt previously agreed that Taiwan was a part of China.
The former and latter is a hallmark for the specious argument some like to engage in...
Since it is clear to anybody who studies Chinese history that the Communists betrayed the Chinese cause for independence...the nationalists bore the brunt of the fighting against the Imperial Japanese, while that POS Mao snuck around and seduced more into his cult...and the weakened nationalists were ripe for communist attack and propaganda...and the civil war ended when the weakened nationalists escaped to Taiwan. Chiang should have turned The Long March into the Long Mass Grave...see what happens when you fail to stop commies dead in their tracks?
Anyway, Taiwanese consider themselves Chinese, duh...they are Chinese! Sons and daughters of free Chinese.
I'd take free Chinese over Communist Chinese, free China over Communist China...and I think most people would.
