Pretty sure 3-4 decades ago PRC was number one...followed by other Asian nations...

Not sure what happened, but when I visited Asia long ago in my sailor days...they smoked like dragons...

I recall that smoking saved the govt money in the US. Health care costs went up but not as much as SS costs went down due to earlier deaths. The states lost out due to medicare (?) but the feds won so the states sued.
