Freaky, the placement of Lahaina on that part of the coast and the wind direction just drove this fire into the town and cut off escape options...something almost like a mini pyroclastic flow from a volcano...

I heard that the island has a huge integrated warning system. It did not go off. The govt tried to send out text messages but apparently that did not work. Most people learned of the fires from smelling smoke.

I also read that in just this past year the per capita going to Ukraine is $3,200 where the paltry $700/household FEMA bucks to Maui folks translates to just $250/person!

Currently Maui County has 40k parcels and only 84 set aside for development per data c.2020...

In 2022 they passed a digital zoning map to rezone properties consistent with their use...

So, between availability, use and ironically that sustainability stuff...how are the PTB's supposed to acquire land?
