Back in the 20's,  I think it was,  it was quite fashionable to have a pet squirrel--became quite the fad,  in fact.

50's too, I had one. Would sit on my shoulder when I walked to the corner store. One day a car came by, beeped the horn, squirrel leaped off--the end

P’nut the Squirrel, of internet fame, has been euthanized after the pet was seized by New York state earlier this week, according to the Department of Environmental Conservation. The seven-year-old gray rescue squirrel, commonly referred to as “P’Nut” on Instagram, Facebook, and TikTok, was put to death, along with Fred the raccoon, so that the animals could be tested for the presence of rabies, according to a statement from the agency obtained by WETM.

The DEC claims that P’nut, who was notably docile and friendly over the course of his very public facing life, bit one of the investigators on the hand while being confiscated from his Elmira home on Wednesday.

“In addition, a person involved with the investigation was bitten by the squirrel. To test for rabies, both animals were euthanized. The animals are being tested for rabies and anyone who has been in contact with these animals is strongly encouraged to consult their physician,” the DEC statement read, according to WETM.

P’nut was rescued by guardian Mark Longo, after the Connecticut native witnessed P’Nut’s mother hit by a car.

So did my great aunt in the fifties.   Thing would be all over her when she sat in her "favorite" chair.
It slept inside a folded up umbrella hanging on their closed in back porch.     You could see the bulge it made anytime it was there.

Said they had to euthanize it in order to test for rabies,   but if that is their reason for euthanizing Peanut,  it's a damn poor excuse. They could have easily tested for rabies the way they used to do it:
Isolate the animal for at least 11 days.  If if dies within that period of time,  it probably had rabies.  If it lives,  it's rabies free.
They could also verify by observing if it takes in water.   Rabid animals are hydrophobic,  which is why some people years ago referred to the disease as "hydrophobia."
And there is a rabies vaccine available if the person who was supposedly bitten by Peanut is worried -- perfectly safe with no harmful side effects (I've had it myself).
I seriously doubt anyone was bitten by Peanut,  though,  it's just a convenient,  yet non-plausible excuse for euthanizing Peanut.
Why did they have to kill Fred the raccoon,  too?  Did he bite someone?
